Fantasy Basketball Free Agent Profile: Darren Collison

Player: Darren Collison

Poition: Point Guard

Team: Sacramento Kings

2016-17 Review

While Collison has never taken his game to the next level, he remains a starter-caliber point guard in the NBA. This past regular season saw the former first-round pick 13.2 points and 4.6 assists while shooting at a tremendous 48 percent mark from the field.

He took over as the Kings' primary starter following the departure of Rajon Rondo in free agency, averaging almost 31 minutes per game and starting 64 of the 68 games in which he appeared. Collison, who has been a starter for the majority of his career, has never averaged more than 16.1 points and 5.6 assists in a single season. Though, his less-than-stellar assist numbers this past season had more to do with the Kings' lack of scoring.

Free Agency Primer

As one of let's say nine potential starter-caliber point guards set to hit the market, it remains to be seen whether Collison will find a starting job outside of Sacramento. That's only magnified by a 2017 draft class that's absolutely stacked at the one.

Still only 29 years old, there should be interest in Collison's services as a starter. It just remains to be seen how strong that interest might be. This month's NBA Draft will likely give us a better understanding.

Fantasy Outlook

This really depends on where Collison lands. If he remains on the Kings, there's a potential for a slight uptick in production. That would be caused by the presence of youngster Buddy Hield for an entire season. Short of it, Hield would likely lead to an uptick in assists from Collison.

Though, as with every free agent in this series of articles, it's all about his situation. If a team like the San Antonio Spurs were to show interest, Collison could see a strong uptick in production. But if he were to go to another bottom feeder on a larger contract, we're not so sure Collison would be fantasy relevant.
