Player: Patty Mills
Position: Point Guard
Team: San Antonio Spurs
2016-17 Review
Still only a reserve in San Antonio, Mills is coming off yet another solid season. He averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 assists while shooting at a solid 41 percent from three-point range. The issue here when it comes to fantasy basketball is that Mills averaged just 21.9 minutes per game. That clearly limited his productivity.
With hat said, Mills did put up double digit points in nearly half his games. If the 28-year-old Mills is able to find a situation in which he sees 30-plus minutes on a consistent basis, he will clearly become a fantasy relevant option.
Free Agency Primer
With the Spurs potentially looking into adding Chris Paul as a free agent, Mills might be moving on to a new team. From a fantasy perspective and when it comes to Mills own career path, that's probably not the worst thing for him.
The issue here is that teams looking for a point guard will have recency bias to overcome. Mills was absolutely atrocious in the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors. In an expanded role with Tony Parker injured, Mills averaged 7.8 points and shot 24 percent from the field.
Sure some teams might assume that's an exception to the rule for Mills, but his performance in what would be an expanded role he'll see on a new team could force others to cool on Mills in free agency.
Fantasy Outlook
Should Mills remains on the Spurs, he will not be a fantasy-relevant option in standard leagues. If he's able to go to a squad in which he sees upwards of 30 minutes, the veteran will surely be rosterable.
When looking at the DFS community, Mills wil remain relevant when starting and faced with a good matchup, both if he's on San Antonio or playing for another team.
