When Isaiah Thomas finally made it onto the court for the Cleveland Cavaliers, many expected it to lift the Cavaliers even further and make them a dominant force in the Eastern Conference. Instead, the team's struggles became the only story and everything that used to work in Cleveland seemed to go sideways.
Among those things that worked was power forward Kevin Love, who started playing some of the best basketball in his tenure with the Cavaliers. When things clicked for the Cavaliers in December, Love's numbers reflected the team's strong stretch of play. In December, Love averaged 22.2 points, 10.1 rebounds and shot 48.5 percent on nearly 16 shots per game in 13 starts.
Since the calendar turned to 2018, Love's numbers and play dropped off. In nine games, Love averaged 12.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and shot 38.8 percent on 9.5 shots per game. A 10-point drop in points per game and the significant drop in shots and field goal percentage stand out. It's something Cavaliers' Head Coach Tyronn Lue told reporters he wants to address by getting Love more touches.
For fantasy owners who loved starting Love last month and really throughout the season before January, this is the news they wanted to hear. It's clear Love is still a talented big man and while Cleveland is trying to bring Thomas along in the flow of its offense, they need to go back more to what worked previously. As Thomas regains his form and the chemistry and flow starts to click in the starting lineup, then we can see how this team really works and can stack up in the East.
Right now though, it's critical the Cavaliers start feeding Love once again as a way to try and get out of this slump they've experienced as of late. Fantasy owners should certainly consider Lue's comments great news, but now we need to see it actually take place.
