After being unable to find a trade partner for veteran guard Deron Williams, the Dallas Mavericks waived him after Thursday's NBA trade deadline.
With a $9 million cap hit this season, it's unlikely that another team will pick Williams up off waivers. This means that he will be free to sign with a team of his choosing. Early indications are that said team will be the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have been looking for a backup to Kyrie Irving.
Williams, 32, is averaging 13.1 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting at 43 percent from the field in 29 minutes of action per game this season.
No matter where Williams lands, he is unlikely to be fantasy relevant moving forward this season. If it is on Cleveland, he will surely see a downtick into the teens when it comes to minutes per game.
The larger fantasy takeaway here is that Williams being waives means rookie Yogi Ferrell will likely see a ton more action as the season progresses. Ferrell is averaging 14.2 points and 4.7 assists in 10 games with Dallas after being brought over from Brooklyn earlier in the season.
