Fantasy Slant: DeMarcus Cousins to the New Orleans Pelicans

We have focused on the general overview of this mind-boggling trade. We have also given you an in-depth look at what it means for the Sacramento Kings from a fantasy perspective.

But let's be clear. The biggest aspect of the deal sending All-Star DeMarcus Cousins to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway and multiple draft picks is Cousins himself heading to Nola.

Let's check in on what this means for fantasy-relevant Pelicans players, both Cousins and Anthony Davis included.

DeMarcus Cousins

As we noted in giving a general overview of the trade, it's highly unlikely that Cousins will be able to match his fantasy output in New Orleans. Cousins has averaged 20-plus shot attempts in each of the past two seasons. In fact, he's seen that stat increase in each of the past four seasons.

This year, Cousins has actually attempted the same amount of shots on average as Davis (20.2 per game). There are only four players in the NBA averaging 20-plus shot attempts per game, two of them now residing in New Orleans.

Look at it this way. Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are both averaging less than 18 attempts per game with the Golden State Warriors. Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving and LeBron James are both attempting less than 20 shot per outing with the Sacramento Kings.

Shooting at a 45 percent clip from the field, Cousins is in the midst of a four-year low in that category. He's also posted a sub 50 percent effective field goal mark in each of his first seven NBA seasons, 2016-17 included.

That right there is going to be the issue when it comes to Cousins' continuing at his ridiculous fantasy pace, which has him No. 1 among centers heading into the unofficial second half of the season.

While we are expecting a significant drop off here, it is important to note that the presence of Davis will help Cousins. Simply put, the former Kings big man did not have any help in Sacramento throughout his career. That will surely change with defenses now having to focus on Davis as well. More than anything it's about shot distribution here, and Davis should still be king (pun intended).

Anthony Davis

Speaking of the big man, Davis is coming off an All-Star Game record 52 points. Mere minutes after that game concluded, he found out that Cousins would be joining him in Nola. Talk about a great night for one of the most-talented players in the Association.

Thus far this season, Davis is averaging 27.7 points, 12.0 rebounds and shooting at a tremendous 50 percent clip from the field. He's adding in 2.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per outing as well. This has Davis as the top fantasy forward in the NBA, ahead of the likes of Kevin Durant and LeBron James

While we project Cousins to see a bit of a downtick from a fantasy perspective, the same likely won't take place when it comes to Davis. Sure he might see a decrease in shot attempts from his 20.2 per game. But here's a guy that's posted a 50-plus percent effective field goal mark in each of his NBA seasons. He's also averaging 1.4 points per shot attempt this season.

Cousins' presence in New Orleans should help Davis out on the offensive end. Teams simply won't be able to throw double teams his way on a consistent basis. And while the same may ring true for Cousins, Davis has been a more efficient scorer throughout his career. That surely plays a role here. We're not looking at much of a downtick in production here. In fact, look for Davis' field goal percentage and efficiency to increase from here on out.

Jrue Holiday

This is where it gets really interesting. Someone is going to have to put up points form the perimeter in New Orleans. With Hield and Evans now out of the equation, that responsibility will land firmly on Holiday's lap. He's been pretty darn good this season, averaging 16.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

Interestingly enough, Holiday is averaging just 13.5 shot attempts per game. Most of them have been contested with the lack of other perimeter options in New Orleans. Remember, both Hield and Evans struggled from the field before being traded to Sacramento.

To make matters even more interesting, Holiday is shooting at a 39 percent clip from distance on the season. That's a career-best mark for the former All-Star. The expectation here has to be that Holiday will see more shots with teams having to focus more on the low-post now that Cousins and Davis are teaming up inside.

If that's the case, we expect Holiday to be even better when it comes to hit shooting efficiency. With potentially more shot attempts to go around here, maybe he can hit the 20-plus point plateau on a consistent basis as the seasons moves along.

Add in the presence of these two All-Stars inside, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Holiday's assist numbers also reach double digits on a consistency basis. If healthy, he should be a fantasy dynamo in the latter half of the season.
