The Philadelphia 76ers officially acquired the No. 1 overall pick in this week's draft from the Boston Celtics in exchange for the No. 3 pick and a future first-round pick.
Philly made this deal for one sole purpose. To acquire former Washington guard Markelle Fultz with that No. 1 selection Thursday night.
Fultz played just one season of college ball at Washington, averaging 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists while shooting at a 48 percent mark from the field.
Once selected, Fultz figures to take over as Philadelphia's starting point guard. He'll team up with a tremendously talented young core that already includes Joel Embiid, Dario Saric and 2016 No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons. That's one of the most-talented young fourseoms in the entire Association.
From a fantasy perspective, Philly has lacked consistent production from the backcourt in recent seasons. Instead, the focus has been on the likes of Embiid and Saric. This will surely give the team some balance. Proven to have range that extends out to the three-point line (41 percent last season), the opportunity should be there for Fultz to put up a tremendous rookie season.
It's something we will cover in detail as everything plays out during the draft and free agency.
The 2017 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday.
