The Los Angeles Lakers will be without veteran small forward Luol Deng indefinitely after he suffered a wrist injury earlier in the week. It's a surprising bit of news and came immediately prior to the team's game against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday.
Rookie Brandon Ingram started in Deng's stead, putting up 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the process.
Look for Ingram to see a ton of minutes with Deng out. The rookie No. 2 overall pick is averaging 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in less than 28 minutes of action per game. The expectation here is that he'll see an uptick of about five minutes more per outing with Deng sidelined.
Deng himself had been in regression mode prior to injury, averaging just 8.1 points and 5.8 rebounds. It's been the lowest-scoring campaign of his 13-year NBA career.
In terms of optics, this is probably a good thing for the young Lakers. It's never bad for a rebuilding team to allow youngsters more opportunity to see the court. From a fantasy perspective, we're in wait-and-see mode when it comes to Ingram. Give it a couple more games and check back in.
