London 2012 - Two Spainards with Fantasy Values Heading in Different Directions

This is our second installment of London 2012 and how it could affect your fantasy roster. Today, we look at Spain’s international team. This team represents the toughest competition for the Dream Team, as Spain’s is well represented by players from the Association. There is no doubt that the most impressive player on Spain’s roster has been Pau Gasol, he appears to be stronger and more aggressive than he has been with the Los Angeles Lakers. Gasol’s 2012 numbers were solid, he posted 17 ppg and 10 boards per contest. I see these numbers holding true for next season. The purple and gold will be playing a more pick and roll oriented offence, in which Gasol should see better quality touches and more opportunities to score facing the basket where he is a handful for any opposing big man.

As good as Pau is, the player most poised to have a breakout fantasy season is Marc Gasol.  Lil’ brother Marc is having a solid Olympic experience; he is contributing like a true big man should.  Marc’s game is progressing every year and each season has seen his career averages exceeded. Look for 2012 to be no different. Coming off near double-double stats, of 14 ppg and almost 9 boards per, look for these numbers to continue to climb, leading to Marc posting double-doubles nightly. This translates into a reliable fantasy option at the center position.

One player that has disappointed for Spain and will disappoint in 2012 fantasy leagues is Jose Calderon.  Calderon is likely auditioning for a job elsewhere as he knows his days in Toronto are coming to a close. The Raptors have turned their offence over to Kyle Lowry and should Jose’s tenure with the Raptors continue, he will find himself relegated to bench duty. Calderon is coming off a season where he posted 10 ppg and almost 9 apg, these numbers will see a considerable drop as will Calderon’s fantasy value.  Baring a trade to a team that is weak at the point guard position, Calderon will have very limited fantasy worth.

Next up, we look at France’s team and see which two players will impact your fantasy roster.
