The Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies had been engaged in trade discussions surrounding Mario Chalmers for a while now. So it wasn't a big surprise that the two teams finally got together to move the veteran point guard to the Western Conference on Tuesday.
Chalmers was traded to Memphis along with forward James Ennis for Beno Udrih and forward Jarnell Stokes.
Chalmers, 29, had taken on a minimal role with Miami after the team acquired Goran Dragic in a trade last February. He was averaging 5.5 points and 3.2 assists in 20 minutes of action prior to the deal. The expectation here has to be that Chalmers will take over for Udrih as the Grizzlies' primary backup point guard behind Mike Conley.
Miami had reportedly asked Memphis to hold off on finalizing the deal in order to find a third team to take on the contract of either Udrih or Stokes. However, the two sides decided to come to terms when no other squad showed interest.
