After each month of the NBA season we will compile our NBA All-Fantasy teams comprised of the top fantasy performers at each position along with a few honorable mentions that might break into the starting lineup next month.
For this month’s Eastern Conference All Fantasy Team we have a lot of familiar names as players are showing their consistent fantasy worth. The trend of not seeing Deron Williams, Dwayne Wade or Monta Ellis crack the upper echelon for fantasy guards continues as it is the NBA young-guns in Paul George and Jrue Holiday who have risen to the top.
Rajon Rondo and Anderson Varejao did post good enough fantasy numbers to be in the starting five here; however, given their respective season ending injuries I omitted them from consideration as we are focusing on players who can help your roster moving forward.
The player rankings used are from ESPN.com Fantasy Sports and are based on a fantasy point per game production.
Here is the January edition of the NBA All-Fantasy Team for the Eastern Conference.
Paul George – Indiana Pacers
Two consecutive months for George on the All-Fantasy Team as he built upon his terrific December month and followed it up with an equally impressive month of January. For the month of January he actually increased his averages to 20.1 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 3.9 apg and 2.5 steals per game. George is showing that he belongings among the elite of fantasy guards as his stellar play is showing no signs of slowing down.
Kyrie Irving – Cleveland Cavaliers
Thanks in large part to a stellar month of December from Rajon Rondo and Kemba Walker; Kyrie Irving failed to make the All-Fantasy squad for the month. Had Rondo been healthy here, Irving would have been relegated to an honourable mention spot; however, Rondo is out and Irving is in as the second best fantasy guard option coming out of the Eastern Conference. A terrific month of January saw Irving post 25.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 5.4 apg and 2.4 steals per game. Look for this production to continue as Irving is practically a one-man show out in Cleveland.
LeBron James – Miami Heat
It is of course not at all surprising to see Lebron James hold down his spot on the All-Fantasy squad for another consecutive month. LeBron duplicated his December stats almost to the number as he once again posted a stat line of 27.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 7.3 apg and 1.9 steals per game. LeBron has locked it in for the year and I’d expect this level of fantasy production to remain constant to the finish.
Carmelo Anthony – NY Knicks
A wickedly good month of January for Carmelo Anthony propelled him to back-to-back appearance on the All-Fantasy. Key to Anthony’s success was the fact that he missed only one game in January as opposed to six missed games in December. For the month, Anthony maintained a 30.3 ppg average while chipping in with 6.3 rpg and 4.2 apg and he scored over 40 points on three occasions. Slight downer for Anthony is that his field goal percentages fell across the board and that is usually an indicator that the shot selection is slipping.
Joakim Noah – Chicago Bulls
Joakim Noah has established himself as the fantasy center to own coming out of the East. He built upon his December performance by raising his rebounds per game average by almost a whole three extra boards per game. His stat line for the month was 10.9 ppg, 13.2 rpg, 3.8 apg and 2.2 blk per game. A bit of an alarming stat for me was the sharp decline in Noah’s free throw percentage during the month. He went from a very respectable .854 in December to a poor .632 in January. These should be gimme points at the line for a player like Noah; hopefully this isn’t an early indicator of player fatigue setting in.
Honorable Mentions:
Jrue Holiday – Philadelphia 76ers
Holiday came very close to unseating Kyrie Irving from the starting lineup as he had a brilliant month of January. A great sign for Holiday was that he didn’t miss any games due to injury in January as opposed to December where he missed four consecutive games. Holiday is challenging for a top fantasy guard spot in the conference and one bad stretch of games out of Irving or Paul George and Holiday will rise to the top.
Al Horford – Atlanta Hawks
Horford turned in yet another consistent fantasy performance in January. He almost mirrored his December stats by posting 16.2 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 3.1 apg and 1.0 blk per game. What did hurt Horford’s fantasy value was the fact that missed two games during the month due to injury and turned in three games where he failed to register double digits in points. It would appear that Horford is battling some hamstring issues; hopefully the All-Star break gives him some much needed rest and he bounces back with an even better month of February.
