After each month of the NBA season we will compile our NBA All-Fantasy teams comprised of the top fantasy performers at each position along with a few honorable mentions that might break into the starting lineup next month.
For this month’s Eastern Conference All-Fantasy Team we welcome some new faces to the ranks of fantasy supremacy. Not at all surprising given his wicked month of March; John Wall has burst onto the scene and he led all guards in terms of fantasy production for the month. Another player who busted out in a big way in March was Philadelphia 76ers big-man Spencer Hawes. Hawes stellar play earned him an honorable mention for the month just behind a familiar foe over in Hot-lanta.
As March finished up, so did a couple players run on the All-Fantasy team. We see that both Dwyane Wade and Greg Monroe were one-and-dones as they weren’t able to hold onto their roster spots. The Milwaukee Bucks sent one of their dynamic guards back to the All-Fantasy team for consecutive months, while somethings don’t change as ‘The King’ retained his crown for yet another month as the leagues top fantasy performer.
The player rankings used are from eDraft.com and reflect total fantasy points accumulated by the player during the month of February.
Here is the March edition of the NBA All-Fantasy Team for the Eastern Conference.
John Wall - Guard, Washington Wizards
Any fantasy general manager saw this coming after the month of March that Wall had. Wall was actually the top-performing guard in the league for the month as he posted averages of 22.1 ppg, 8.0 apg, 4.8 rpg and 1.8 steals per game. The month started off fairly pedestrian-like; however, Wall turned it on to finish with seven games with over 20 points, including a monster 47 point night against Memphis and a 35 point night against Orlando. Wall can thank his impressive shooting during the month for the bump in scoring, he shot the ball at a .484 clip. It looks like Wall is determined to finish up the season on a high-note as he has raised his play and been able to sustain it nicely. It may have taken till the second-to-last month of the season to get going, but now that he is, he will be tough to stop.
Jrue Holiday - Guard, Philadelphia 76ers
Holiday actually had a bit of a down month as his averages for the month were a bit off his season numbers. The fantasy production was still good enough to hold off Monta Ellis for the second guard spot. Inconsistency plagued Holiday during the month as he had four games in which he posted single-digit scoring. The lowlight of the month came in a 30 point shellacking at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers where Holiday scored two points in 33 minutes of action. Despite these shaky performances, Holiday still managed to average 16.3 ppg, 8.2 apg and 4.8 rpg during the month.
LeBron James – Forward, Miami Heat
Making his fifth consecutive appearance on the eDraft All-Fantasy squad; James had himself a freakish month of March. In leading the Heat to a 17-1 record during the month, James averaged 25.8 ppg, 7.4 apg, 8.2 rpg, 1.3 blocks and 1.8 steals per game. Included in this impressive stat line was a triple-double performance against his old squad the Cleveland Cavaliers. James remains the top-dog in terms of fantasy value. He is a legitimate threat to go off for a triple-double every night. As the season wraps up in the coming weeks, James will be looking to put the finishing touches on what is likely going to be another MVP season.
Josh Smith - Forward, Atlanta Hawks
It isn’t that Smith had an outstanding March and propelled himself past the competition for top spot among the Eastern Conference forwards, in fact, Smith’s numbers were down during the month. This isn’t to say that Smith wasn’t good, but all he really had to do was continue to meet his season averages of 17.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 4.3 apg. Smith only narrowly beat Paul Pierce in terms of fantasy value; however, Pierce seems to be getting his late-season groove on, while Smith is coasting for that new contract.
Al Horford - Center, Atlanta Hawks
Horford has turned into something of a mainstay on the All-Fantasy squad either as a top-five performer or as an honorable mention. His production throughout the season has been Tim Duncanesque as double-doubles are the norm. While the stat lines may not blow you away they can be counted on night in and night out in terms of fantasy production. March was no different for Horford as he kept the consistency going with averages of 19 ppg, 10.9 rpg and 3.3 apg.
Honorable Mentions:
Monta Ellis - Guard, Milwaukee Bucks
I was a little bit surprised to see Ellis out of the top-two spots for guards on the month. It seemed like he was having big night after big night in terms of scoring; however, when you look at the complete picture he really had three off-games where he failed to score in double digits and he failed to register double digit assist or rebound games in the entire month. The lack of consistency and all-around stats hurt Ellis during the month. Ellis is an explosive scorer and can get off for 40 on any given night, but the consistency is maddening and the field-goal percentage is well, hit and miss.
Paul Pierce – Forward, Boston Celtics
Pierce is doing everything he can to keep the Celtics afloat in the playoff race. He got off to a bit of a slow start to the month, but he finished up strong in his last five games. For the month he averaged 19.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 5.9 apg and his last five games of the month saw three consecutive double-doubles and one triple-double coming against Atlanta. Pierce has missed a couple games recently due to an injury and personal reasons. I’d expect both issues to be put behind him and look for him to raise his game even more to finish out the season on a high-note.
Spencer Hawes - Center, Philadelphia 76ers
If someone had asked at the start of March to predict the second best fantasy producing center out of the East, I would not have gone with Hawes. Hawes proved a lot of people wrong as he had himself quite a month. He finished with averages of 14.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg and 3.8 apg and 1.9 blocks per game. What is even more impressive is that he had a total of six double-doubles on the year prior to March; during March he had nine. Hawes also posted his highest field-goal percentage of any month with an impressive .510 and he continues to knock down his free throws; which is getting to be a rarity for NBA big-men these days. If the strong play continues I’d expect another appearance out of Hawes on our All-Fantasy squad for the month of April.
