We continue our eDraft exclusive look at the top NBA draft choices over the past 40 years. Our continued look back through history will determine who was the best draft selection through each slot in the draft. We don’t stop with the first overalls, we will go pick by pick, year by year to to identify the very best selections of all-time.
As we move on from the greatest 20th overall draft pick who just happened to be Larry Nance who strung together a successful 13 year career. He was a three-time NBA All-Star and considered a defensive stalwart during the 1980’s. Nance finished off the 20’s and made way for the high-teens and lottery picks that we now tackle.
Up next is the 19th overall draft spot and after a shallow talent pool to wade through for the 20th spot; we have nowhere to go but up. After considerable review and analysis, the 20th overall draft spot offers considerably more, so without further adieu let's take a look at what we have to choose from.
Forty years of NBA drafts and from those we have only seven players who garner mention here. Once again we lack any Hall of Famers, we have no future Hall of Famers and we have no MVP’s to choose from. I really thought that we would be seeing a stronger field as we inched our way through the draft. As it turns out the bottom five picks thus far are killing it.
We get our analysis started with the 2009 draft that saw Jeff Teague get selected by Atlanta and the year prior had Cleveland selecting J.J. Hickson in 2008. After a seven year hiatus we go back to back again with the 2001 and 2000 drafts. Jamaal Magloire went to Charlotte and our eventual champion here went to Portland in 2001.
Three others who definitely warrant discussion are: Dee Brown who was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1990, Rod Strickland went to the New York Knicks in 1998 and John Paxon who was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 1983. While these three all made their marks, they fell just short when it came to matching up to our eventual champ.
So who was drafted by the Blazers back in 2001 you ask? None other than a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, affectionately known as Z-Bo; Zach Randolph. Randolph has two All-Star nominations to his name to go along with a 2004 Most Improved Player award and an All-NBA Third Team nomination. Granted, Randolph has no other significant awards, he does have seven seasons in the Association where he averaged a double-double and has been an integral part of the Memphis Grizzlies franchise.
While Randolph likely won’t be called to the Naismith Hall of Fame; he will get his jersey retired someday by Memphis and it will be a deserved honour for him. In the interim; however, Randolph has earned eDraft’s title as the NBA’s greatest 19th overall draft selection.
