NBA Fantasy Disapointments in 2013

As the 2013 portion of the NBA season is winding down it is time to reflect on the fantasy disappointments thus far. Now that the NBA season is two months old and now gearing up for the home stretch; it is not yet to late to unload some of that fantasy dead weight from your roster.

Trimming the fat from the holidays is a New Year’s tradition. Beat the crowd and your fellow general managers by getting a head start on the purging. Back in November I gave you some fantasy duds from the first two weeks of the season. As I check back on those picks I see that Andrew Bogut is rebounding well but not scoring, Zach Randolph and  Anderson Varejao are the subject of trade rumours, Tyreke Evans has been a non-factor and the duo of J.J. Hickson and Kenneth Faried have been similarly ineffective thus far.

For our second rendition, I’d like to keep the aforementioned players on the list of disappointments, just in case you didn’t dump them on my first recommendation and I’m going to throw some more at you. So get ready to shed some unwanted dead weight from your roster and be trim and efficient for the New Year.

Let’s start the purging in Brooklyn where there is a lot of fantasy fat to be cut. First up is Deron Williams who since becoming a regular starter is now averaging career lows in points and assist per game. Williams is showing some signs of age as well given his recent injury reports as well. Given the decrease in productivity and couple in the missed games and Williams needs to be sat down.

Staying in the city of disappointment, we can add Paul Pierce to the list of fantasy duds thus far. Not only has Pierce shown a colossal regression this season but he has since ceded his starting role to the prolific Alan Henderson. Pierce’s play of late has certainly warranted his bench relegation and if you haven’t yet purged him from your fantasy roster then start the new year with a Pierce-void fantasy roster.

Here are some interesting numbers to digest over the holidays. How about $12 million in guaranteed salary this year and for next season. That $12 million is currently buying a slash line that looks like 6.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 0.7 blks over a whopping 22 minutes of game action a night. Which plug-in reserve is giving such a line? Well it’s none other than The Big Ticket himself Kevin Garnett. Not as though you needed any more evidence of his decline but any fantasy value you are hoping to squeeze out of holding on to Garnett should be forgotten come 2014.

Moving over to the bay area we find the Denver Nuggets Andre Iguodala our next targeted problem area. Iggy has missed significant time due to injury and even though we are now two games into his return; his longevity for the rest of the season has already been called into question.

When healthy Iguodala hasn’t exactly been the difference maker that the Nuggets were hoping for when they guaranteed him $12 million-plus a season for the next four years. He has scored over 20 points only twice so far this season and he has failed to register a single double-double on the year whereas he had 10 the year before. Iguodala was a sexy fantasy pick to start the season given the offseason hype; however, the hype has fizzled and so has his fantasy value.

A player who has now played himself into the realm of the fantasy irrelevant is none other than Gerald Wallace; the 12-year NBA veteran, current Boston Celtic and who still has two years and $20 million left owing on a horrific contract is a fantasy non factor these days. Wallace is seeing limited minutes in beantown and thusly his production has been poor. While Wallace’s fantasy value has been in steady decline since going to Brooklyn in 2012 he has truly bottomed out this year.

Bringing this rendition of the NBA’s fantasy disappointments to a close we stop in to Milwaukee who is home to much disappointment this season. Of the many to choose from it is Ersan Ilyasova who truly distinguishes himself in the crowd. Ilyasova was coming off back-to-back seasons in which he averaged over 13 ppg while rebounding at around 7.5 ppg. This season those averages are sitting at 8.2 ppg and 4.6 rpg and those numbers are coming in 10 games started and with over 27 minutes of action a night.

So there you go, six new players identified as a means to trim your fantasy roster down for the new year. Cut your losses now and start shopping for replacements as one can’t carry non-producers around for ever and if there was ever a time for a fresh start make it a New Years resolution and feel better about your fantasy roster in 2014.
