The NBA season is full of ups and downs. Players performances are very much of an ebb and flow. At times players may be performing well, while at others they might be stinking the joint out. A key to fantasy success is to recognize that a player is hot, ride the streak while you can and sell at the pinnacle so that you maximize the salary value or trade value depending on your league format.
Hold a player too long and you not only watch his production recede back to his norms but you also lose the opportunity to cash out at the heightened value. Fantasy values are very much like buying and selling on the stock market. Buy low and sell high are the basics; putting them into practise can be harder than it sounds.
Here are the overachievers if you will over the past month. If you are holding onto these guys, look to cash out now and maximize the return on your investment. Wait too long and you will have lost out as these players are bound to come back to their playing reality.
A real overachiever in the month of December has been the Charlotte Bobcats Kemba Walker. As much as I like Walker as a solid fantasy option, he just isn’t the 22.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 5.4 apg player that his recent stat line would suggest. The last five games have been even more impressive as the slash line looks like 25.2 ppg, 6 rpg and 5 apg; these points per game totals are nearly seven points higher per contest over his season averages. Now is the time to cash out on Walker as the going isn’t going to get any better than this.
The Toronto Raptors guard Kyle Lowry is likely playing for a trade as he seems to have found a new gear in which to play at. Why this motivated play wasn’t evident earlier is simply left to speculation. Nonetheless, I can’t imagine Lowry’s improved play to last too much longer and it will most certainly come to a crashing halt once he is traded.
Lowry’s December line is only moderately ahead of his season averages; however, take a look at his last five games and one will see that he is playing over his head. Playing for the woeful Toronto Raptors is not conducive to supporting a 19.4 ppg, 8.2 apg, 4.8 rpg and 1.8 steals per game. Look at moving Lowry now while his value is overinflated.
One hates to rain on a parade, especially when it could just be one of the finest moments of a young career; however, with your long-term fantasy interest at heart, one must do it. The Milwaukee Bucks Brandon Knight is in the midst of an unbelievable stretch that has seen him produce at a clip of 22.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg and 7.2 apg over his last five contests. Knight is a quality point guard, he just isn’t that kind of quality. His value may never be higher than it is now so look at cashing out before the bottom falls out on his market.
There you have it, three fantasy overachievers who are poised for a market crash. Check back in as I’ll be offering more sell recommendations for the forwards and centers. Remember to sell high on players, don’t get too attached to anyone on your roster as true value is acquired by capitalizing on these ebbs and flows in one’s productivity.
