It is time to look back at those sleeper picks you made to start the season. The mid way point of the season allows for time of reflection and analysis of those players who perhaps flew under the radar to start the season but are now flying high on everyone’s draft boards.
Now as nice as it is to look back and pat yourself on the back for having done your research in snagging a sweet sleeper pick for your fantasy roster we must look forward to the second half of the season. We round out our analysis with the shift to the Eastern Conference sleeper picks who might have gone unnoticed to start the season but who are poised for big things in the second half.
Here are nine players who are making an impact on their NBA team and who will impact your fantasy squad.
Earl Clark – Los Angeles Lakers
Earl Clarke is having himself one heck of a coming out party this season. Clarks first three years in the Association were clouded in obscurity as he started a total of one game over that time. He was viewed as somewhat of a throw in piece in the Dwight Howard trade, he has now become arguable the second best player on the court some nights. By taking advantage of Pau Gasol’s injury and Dwight Howard’s indifference to playing; Clark has emerged as a reliable option at both ends of the floor. This past month Clark has averaged 14 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 1.2 stls and 1.3 blks all the while shooting .486 from the field. Earl Clark is the Jeremy Lin of 2012 as he has earned the moniker Clark Knight. His success should continue into the second half of the season so watch for him to be available in the later rounds of deep leagues.
Danny Green – San Antonio Spurs
This fourth year product out of North Carolina has become an everyday starter for the San Antonio Spurs and his regular play has sparked his fantasy production. Green is an unheralded three-point shooter as he connects on his threes with the same accuracy as everywhere else on the floor. As the season progresses it is apparent that the likes of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan will be given rest days; Green should benefit from this greatly. This past month has seen Green average 18 ppg, 2.0 apg and 3.4 rpg. The assist and rebounding stats are a bit low; however that isn’t his role on the team.
Kenneth Faried – Denver Nuggets
The Manimal Kenneth Faried is still undervalued as a small forward in most leagues. He has put up 22 double-doubles on the season and continues to provide consistent offense and rebounding on every night. Faried plays an all-out aggressive style of ball that usually precipitates injury; (see Blake Griffin) however, Faried has played in and started every game this season for the Nuggets. It would seem that as the season progresses, Faried is only getting stronger and more confident. If the last two weeks are any indication of things to come; I’ll gladly take his 16.2 ppg and 9.8 rpg averages to go along with his .623 field goal percentage.
Randy Foye – Utah Jazz
After a slow start to the season, Randy Foye has really picked up his play of late. Foye is a shooter, he offers minimal contributions in terms of rebounding and assists; his primary focus is to knock down the open jumpers. Foye has certainly found his shooting stroke of late as this past month has seen averages of 14.6 ppg, 3.4 apg and 1.7 rpg. Don’t expect much more in terms of fantasy value out of Foye; however, he should maintain this stat line through the second half of the season.
Omer Asik – Houston Rockets
This Houston Rocket big man may have limited a limited scoring range around the hoops; however, he still generates enough offensive rebounds to score in double digits on a consistent basis. A large part of the Rockets success in running the floor and generating quick offense is the rebounding of Asik as he gobbles up the defensive boards for a quick outlet pass. A very undervalued centerman in fantasy pools as Asik already has 24 double-doubles on the season. If the past month is any indication of things to come; the 14 ppg, 14 rpg and 1.5 blks per game are impressive to say the least.
Chandler Parsons – Houston Rockets
Here is another Houston Rocket player who is getting better and more valuable as a fantasy option as the season progresses. Chandler Parsons has become a big part of the Rockets success as he gives them a viable scoring option on the wing and in transition. The month of February has been Chandler’s best month so far and he is looking to carry forth his 16.5 ppg, 5.3 apg and 4.7 rpg averages. There are a lot of much-hyped small forwards available but keep your eye on Parsons for a late round steal.
J.J. Hickson – Portland Trailblazers
J.J. Hickson is having a very solid season in terms of fantasy production. He is shooting a career high in field goal percentage with .563 while needing one more double-double on the season to set a new personal best of 29. His production over the past two weeks has been slowed due to a sprained ankle, but that shouldn’t be cause for concern after the all star break. Hickson’s stats on the season are 12.7 ppg and 10.4 rpg. For a guy averaging a double-double on the season he remains undervalued and is a must own in deeper fantasy leagues.
Nikola Pekovic – Minnesota Timberwolves
To start the season, there wasn’t a fantasy GM around who would have pegged Nikola Pekovic as the Minnesota Timberwolves best fantasy player by the all star break. Thanks to injuries to Kevin Love and the recent return from injury for Ricky Rubio, it is indeed Pekovic who has been the consistent fantasy stud thus far. On the season Pekovic is averaging a solid 15.9 ppg and 8.9 rpg to go along with a .506 field goal percentage and 19 double-doubles on the year. Pekovic is a great option at the center spot for your fantasy roster as his production is as good as anyones.
Greivis Vasquez – New Orleans Hornets
Everyone just assumed that Eric Gordon would be the starting point guard for the Hornets and also represent the single best fantasy option for the club. While Gordon has been decent enough in stretches, it has been the play of Greivis Vasquez that has caught fantasy GM’s attention. I am a big fan of what this second year player out of Maryland can do on the court. For a 6’6” point guard he handles the ball well, racks up the assists, is a great rebounder and can score without forcing shots. Vazquez will be looking to continue his success as he builds off a tremendous month of January that saw him post 14.8 ppg, 10.6 apg and 4.7 rpg. These stats are worthy of a high round pick so if Vazquez is still on the board come the midpoint of your draft scoop him up and thank your lucky stars.
