The NCAA season is about to tip off with it’s regular season action and in no other arena and no other state is this being more anticipated than in Kansas where Allen Fieldhouse will be rocking come November 8. Of course the hype and hysteria is due in large part to one young man who kept the basketball world on edge till he announced his intention to attend Kansas University.
Every year there are a select group of high school ballers whose college recruiting trips and declarations of intent are closely followed. These select student-athletes are highly touted prospects who are all too often labelled as the next greatest thing. In the case of Andrew Wiggins, the hype and expectations of greatness seem to be well warranted.
The Canadian born Wiggins has been on the basketball radar of scouts, universities and recruiters since he reached his teenage years. Wiggins has graced nationally syndicated magazine covers as well as made a name for himself on a global stage. His every move at Kansas is being documented by twitter posts. Timely updates as to where he is on campus, what classes he takes and what kind of pizza he ordered is being devoured by Wiggins crazed fans.
Of course the mere fact that Wiggins is on a college campus at all is due to the NBA’s crackdown on underage players declaring for the NBA draft.
With Wiggins having to wait a year until being draft eligible it will simply fuel the speculation he will be the first overall pick in next seasons entry draft. If the NBA had permitted it; Wiggins likely would have been the top selection last season straight out of highschool.
Wiggins is being touted as a once-in-a-generation type player. Which is fortunate for many basketball fans who are just getting engaged in the sport; however, I’ve already been privy to such talents. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James; those are generational superstars. We can’t in all fairness put Wiggins in this class, at least not until he laces up his sneaks in the Association and we see his game against the best of the best.
In keeping with the hype-machine that is ‘Riggin it for Wiggins’ eDraft will be providing updates along the way highlighting Wiggins games for Kansas as well as keep tabs on the NBA teams who are in the running to land this potential franchise player. Stay tuned to eDraft right through the NCAA hoop season for Wiggins Watch 2014.
