Texans Quarterback Ryan Mallett Out for Season
After sitting patiently behind Tom Brady for four years, Ryan Mallett finally got his chance to start when he was traded to the Houston Texans. In Houston he sat behind Ryan Fitzpatrick for the first part of the season and finally got his chance to start. Two games later his season is done. Last week Mallett was on the injury report with a strained chest muscle. During warmups before this week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals Mallett aggravated the injury but played the whole game anyway. After undergoing an MRI on Monday it was discovered that he tore a muscle in his right pectoral and will miss the remainder of the season.
MRI Shows Mass in Eric Berry’s Chest, Out for Season
Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been placed on non-football illness list on Monday due to an MRI of his chest that showed a mass on the right side of his chest. His season is now over so he can concentrate on something far more important than football. While it hasn’t been officially diagnosed yet, it is believed to be lymphoma. We all watch football every week and can take it very seriously at times, but it’s times like these that put it all in perspective. It’s just a game. Berry’s situation is real life.
Robert Griffin III Has Another Disappointing Outing
There was a lot of talk going into the Washington Redskin’s game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday that Redskins head coach Jay Gruden might sit Robert Griffin III and put backup Colt McCoy in instead. During their game on Sunday Griffin certainly didn’t do himself any favors by quieting the critics and making Gruden’s choice to keep Griffin as the starter any easier. Griffin completed 11 of 19 pass attempts for 106 yards and zero touchdowns. He was also sacked five times. While all the sacks weren’t his fault, he showed a complete lack of pocket presence. On most of the sacks he had no idea a defender was anywhere close to him. Despite all of this, Gruden said on Monday that the “intent” was for Griffin to start this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Using the words he used, he certainly left himself an out in case he wants to replace Griffin with McCoy.
Johnny Manziel Involved in Incident
Very early Saturday morning it is alleged that Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Johnny Manziel, and his entourage, was approached by a man claiming he was a Browns fan. The fan tried to give Manziel a hug when he was allegedly struck in the face several times. Manziel released a statement claiming there was no entourage and that the accuser ran up to him and tried accosting him. As Ray Farmer, General Manager of the Browns, said in a statement, the time in which this incident occurred is troubling. Regardless of whose side of the story is true, Manziel shouldn’t be out at the time. Reasons like these are why teams didn’t draft him much earlier last May.
Tashaun Gipson Suffers MCL Injury
Cleveland Browns safety, and current NFL leader in interceptions, Tashaun Gipson suffered a Grade 3 MCL injury on Sunday. Gipson didn’t suffer any damage to his ACL so he won’t be in need of surgery. If the Browns keep him active and can make the playoffs, there is a chance he can play again this season. For a secondary that just started to play their best football of the season this is a very big blow.
Odell Beckham Makes Catch of the Year in Losing Effort
The New York Giants lost another game and this one to a division rival in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. There are a lot of reasons for the Giants organization and fans to be disappointed and upset about. One of those things is certainly not rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham has only played in seven games so far this season and already has quite the highlight reel of catches. However, the catch he made Sunday against the Cowboys is the catch of the year, possibly of the decade. He caught the ball with three fingers, jumping backwards in the air, stayed in bounds, and all while he was being interfered with by the defender. Beckham continues to shine and give the Giants hope for the future.
Texans Sign Quarterback Thad Lewis
In light of the Ryan Mallett news, the Texans decided to go out and sign quarterback Thad Lewis. This signing is for depth considering the only backup the Texans had behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick was rookie Tom Savage. With only six starts to his credit, Lewis is simply an emergency plan for the Texans.
NaVorro Bowman to Miss Another Week of Practice
San Francisco 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman started the season on the physically unable to perform list and has until December 9th to be activated. On Monday it was reported that the 49ers will wait another week to start Bowman practicing with the team. Bowman was able to start practicing last week. With backups Chris Borland and Michael Wilhoite playing so well as starters, it certainly puts less pressure on the 49ers to try and rush Bowman back. They are much more comfortable to error on the side of caution in this situation.
Eagles and Cowboys Trash Talking Has Started Already
Few rivalries in sports are as heated as the one between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. On Thanksgiving Day these two teams meet for the first time in a span of two meetings in three weeks. The Cowboys have been getting a lot of praise this season for their offensive line. Well, Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan doesn’t see what all the talk is about. He said it’s basically the same line he faced last season and they’re OK linemen. A lot of times in division rivalries the teams are so familiar with each other the difference isn’t game planning because both teams usually know what the other one is going to do. Sometimes the difference between winning and losing is the little extra bit of motivation one team might get from the other. Logan is going to find out very quickly whether or not it’s the same offensive line he faced last season. This time they could have a little something extra to prove to the Eagles.
Broncos Looking for a New Kicker
If the Denver Broncos have had one major flaw all season it’s been their kicker. It started when long time Broncos kicker Matt Prater was given a four game suspension. The Broncos then traded for Brandon McManus from the Giants and released Prater after his suspension was finished. Well, McManus has missed four field goals this season, his latest being in the third quarter of the Broncos game this past Sunday when the Broncos were down 21-17. Two candidates for the job will likely be Jay Feely and Rian Lindell.
