2013 AFC South Preview

Although the Houston Texans have won the division for two straight years, 2013 is a new season with many changes and challenges.
The defending champ Texans are trying to improve their offense. Quarterback Matt Schaub is steady and consistent but has some age and a long injury history. Houston drafted wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in the first round of the draft to improve the passing game. Ben Tate is expected to lighten the running load on Arian Foster. The offensive line is one of the best. The defense is expected to be even tougher with the return of inside linebacker Brian Cushing.

The Indianapolis Colts surprised observers with their 2012 season. After finishing last in 2011 they achieved a wild card berth this past year. Andrew Luck is the key to Colt hopes. He must cut down on interceptions, increase his completion percentage and throw for more touchdowns. Ahmad Bradshaw was signed to improve the running game. Colt' receivers are good but the offensive line needs solidifying. The Colt defense is a work in progress. They need vast improvement to be consistent.  Indianapolis drafted defensive end Bjoern Werner in the first round hoping he gives it success in the pass rush.

The Tennessee Titans suffered 10 losses last year. Quarterback Jake Locker is young enough to improve, but his production has left a lot to be desired.  Running back Chris Johnson has been a steady performer for years and looks to have a big year.  Talented wide receiver Kenny Britt is coming off an injury-riddled season but hopes to rebound. Kendall Wright hopes to have a breakout second year.  Tennessee has taken big steps to improve its offensive line. The Titans' defense showed some improvement in their last preseason game but it’s questionable whether they can produce in the regular season on a consistent basis.

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost 14 games in 2012. Blaine Gabbert will start at quarterback in 2013. Just like Locker, a young Gabbert needs a lot of refinement. Maurice Jones-Drew is expected back from injury but may be running out of time in his career. Wide receiver Justin Blackmon has been suspended for the first four games. Cecil Shorts has been more consistent than Blackmon.

It looks like the Texans should repeat as division champs. But if they slip the Colts will pass them. This will especially be true if the injury bug bites Schaub again or if Luck makes huge strides in his second season.  The Titans have a chance to improve overall but don’t yet seem ready to contend for the division title or even a wild card berth. The Jags should be in the running again for the top pick in the NFL draft in 2014.
