It has been quite some time since Miami has offered fantasy owners much value (aside from basketball of course). This year however, should be very different for the Dolphins, as second year quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been surrounded with a plethora of young talent. Among the receivers now at Tannehill’s disposure include two new tight ends, Dustin Keller and Dion Sims, and a second year player looking to vastly improve in Michael Egnew. While Keller should come in and become the team’s top tight end, how do they all compare with one another in terms of fantasy?
Dustin Keller, Tight End:
Coming over from the New York Jets, Keller’s fantasy value should skyrocket in Miami. While he will be one of many options for Tannehill, Keller should still get his share of yardage and touchdowns. By the end of the year he should be a top- 15 tight end which could potentially make him a No. one fantasy tight end in deeper leagues, or a nice flex option or spot start in all leagues.
2013 Stat Projection: 60 receptions, 700 yards receiving, 4 receiving touchdowns
Dion Sims, Tight End:
With a receiving core that includes Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson and Dustin Keller I find it hard to believe this rookie will see many passes thrown his direction. While Sims has great size he should be a year or two away from establishing himself as an option in fantasy. Unless Keller goes down to an injury this season, Sims should remain on the waiver wire for the season.
2013 Stat Projection: 8 receptions, 80 yards receiving, 0 touchdowns
Michael Egnew, Tight End:
Egnew was definitely a disappointment for the Dolphins last season. However, early reports out of Miami this offseason have shown that he is really making a push to not only remain on the roster, but to also push Keller for the top tight end spot. While I do not believe he will be much of a threat to Keller this season, he could still see plenty of time on the field. Chances are slim that Egnew will provide much fantasy value, but he could definitely prove himself to be a super- sleeper in 2013.
2013 Stat Projection: 35 receptions, 400 yards receiving, 1 touchdown
In Comparison:
Keller is the top fantasy tight end on the Miami Dolphins roster this season. While he is not a top-tier tight end, he should still be a nice compliment to most fantasy rosters. Take him in the mid-to- late rounds of all drafts. Sims is a year or so away from providing any sort of fantasy value. Unless the Dolphins plan on using a lot of two tight end sets, similar to the Patriots, I do not see much coming from him this season. As for Egnew, this offseason will be huge for his fantasy value. If he can string together some solid preseason games, then he is definitely someone to keep an eye on during the season. However, I still suggest not drafting him, unless you are in an extremely large fantasy league. True value for Egnew will come as a waiver-wire pickup.
