There have been a lot of top players in the NFL that made their mark at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. Players like Clay Matthews, Andy Dalton and Arian Foster. Who would make their mark this year? Who would be memorable in this game? Here’s a list of five players that were remembered from Saturday’s game.
5. Margus Hunt, SMU
Hunt will be remembered in this game for all the wrong reasons. He was unable to make his mark on this game and pressure the quarterback. When he was able to get up the field into the backfield the tackle would kick him out. Hunt will need a strong combine workout if he expects to move into the first round.
4. Marquis Goodwin, Texas
Goodwin is a receiver with world class speed that was on showcase in last summer’s Olympics. He was able to make a few catches and showed a burst. I expect Goodwin to be a great special team’s player and possibly work his way into a role as a slot receiver. With his speed you could expect him to challenge teams vertically like Mike Wallace.
3. E.J. Manuel, Florida State
Manuel was the best of worst when it came to quarterback play. No one quarterback took a hold of being the best signal caller. Manuel was able to lead the south squad to their three touchdown drives. He was able to show that he could put some touch on a pass over the top on a touchdown throw to Michael Williams. I still view Manuel as a second- to-third- round pick.
2. Eric Fisher, Central Michigan
Coming into this game Fisher was either going to hurt his draft stock or solidify himself as a top tackle in the draft. Going into the game he was phenomenal in practice going against the top defensive ends in college football this year. His footwork is what scouts enjoyed about him most and his strength to keep them from getting under his pad level. Fisher is expected to be a top 15-pick in April.
1. Lane Johnson, Oklahoma
Prior to the Senior Bowl I had Lane going in the second round but I might want to reassess my grade on Johnson. He was able to man handle Hunt on many snaps, letting him come in on passing plays before driving him out of the pocket. He was also knocking him back on running downs. Johnson has great footwork and initial punch which may land him to the Giants at pick 19.
Now it is important not to put too much stock into these games but it is more of a gauge than what they did this season against weaker opposition in a lot of cases.
