2013 NFL Draft: Bacarri Rambo Scouting Report

Bacarri Rambo had an up-and-down career while at the University of Georgia.  He burst onto the scene in a big way his sophomore season, starting every game and putting up big numbers.  He would go on to miss the first game of both his junior and senior seasons due to drug-related suspensions, but when he was on the field; Rambo was a rockstar for the Bulldogs.

Let’s go ahead and take a look at this talented, but troubled safety.

Ht Wt Class Ranking Projection
6'0" 211 Senior      89  Late-Second, Early-Third Round

Strengths

Size: While he may not be a physical freak, at 6'0" and 211 pounds; Rambo has the size necessary to match up against any type of receiver, tight end or running back in coverage and lay big hits on ball carriers.

Hands: Rambo has phenomenal hands.  He will always win in a battle for a jump ball (even against bigger receivers) and can pull in balls that appear to be uncatchable.  If the ball hits him in the hands, Rambo is going to catch it. He doesn’t swat balls often because of his top-tier catching ability.

Versatility: Like I touched on before, Rambo’s size, along with his great hands, ability to read quarterbacks and ball-hawking skills, makes him a versatile weapon that can be used at multiple positions in any scheme.  His true position is free safety, but because of his ball-hawking and big-hit ability, he’s a fit for strong safety as well.  Rambo is also physical and quick enough to stay with receivers, tight ends and even running backs in man coverage; as well as hold his own in over-the-top zone coverage.

Weaknesses

Gambler: Despite being incredibly talented at reading a quarterback's eyes and possessing top-notch ball-hawking abilities; Rambo often will take a chance on where a ball is going to be by trying to get an early jump on an interception.  Sometimes this works with great success, but most of the time he ends up jumping the play way-too early and taking himself out completely.  He must work on sitting back and trusting his instincts to make a big impact at the next level.

Off-Field Issues: Rambo was suspended twice for failing drug tests. This is probably what hurt his draft stock more than anything else, as teams aren’t going to risk a high draft pick on a player with a history of drug-related issues.

Bottom Line

Rambo has all of the physical and mental tools to be an impact maker from day one in the NFL.  To be successful, he’ll have to stay clean and out of trouble off the field.  While he’s not going to go in the top-50 picks, there’s still a chance he will be taken at the end of the second round; if he can prove to teams that he’s moved on from past transgressions and that drugs won’t be a problem moving forward.  The minor flaws in his game can easily be coached out at the NFL level.
