2013 NFL Draft: D.J. Fluker Scouting Report

Despite recent rumors that the Miami Dolphins are high on former Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker at 12, I highly doubt that a fourth offensive tackle goes that high in the draft. Heck, I am not entirely too sure that Fluker translates best as an offensive tackle in the NFL. At the very least, he isn't going to be a stellar left tackle.

Does a team take a right tackle that high in the draft?

Of course, this doesn't mean that we are not high on Fluker here at eDraft. Rather, it's more about understanding where he fits best and how he can succeed at the next level. On that note, lets take a look at our scouting report on the talented offensive lineman.

Strengths

Power: Fluker is a great straight-forward power blocker. He will not struggle going up against stronger defenders in the run game. He is tough to move off the spot and can open up massive holes on the outside. In addition, Fluker does a solid job getting to the second tier in his blocks and opening up holes down the field.

Build/Frame: By no means is Fluker a "sloppy" or "heavy" 335 pounds. He has a solid physique and is built like a true NFL offensive lineman. This frame and power enables Fluker to dominate and eat smaller defenders alive, which will also be the case at the next level.

Versatility: While I have indicated that Fluker will not be a decent regular left tackle in the NFL, he can come in and do a solid job in a pinch. His more natural positions are right tackle and left guard. That being said, Fluker could actually come in and play all five offensive line positions, if neccessary. This makes him the most versatile offensive line prospect in the entire draft.

Run Blocking: This has to do with Fluker's frame and strength. Both suggest that he will be a dominating figure as a run blocker in the NFL. Again, this indicates that his best position would be left guard, but he could easily move to the other side as well. He can literally dominate opposing defensive players with this combination of size and speed. Teams looking for a strong blocking presence along the interior of their offensive line will be high on Fluker. I see the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers all as great fits.

Weaknesses

Athleticism: Nearly the most unathletic top offensive line prospect in the entire draft, right up there with Chance Warmack. That is saying a whole lot considering that his former teammate at Alabama is solely slated to play inside in the NFL. Fluker's weight will be a primary concern for the team that drafts him. He cannot afford to be a pound over 335 in terms of playing weight at the next level. As it is, you will not see Fluker do a great job as a pull blocker in the run game or fend off speed rushers from the outside. This is a primary reason I don't have him as a blindside protector in the NFL.

Technique: Fluker gets too high on blocks and can be thrown off his spot in pass protection. While he does utilize his hands extremely well, Fluker just doesn't seem to get below the pads of the defender too often. This seems to indicate that he will struggle early on in his career.

Pass Protection: You combine a lack of athleticism with inferior technique and the end result will be issues in pass protection. While Fluker's technique can be fixed, you can't do much about a lack of athleticism. As it is, his ceiling is as a top of the line right tackle.

Bottom Line

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Fluker's. I currently have a second-round grade on him and think he can come in to contribute immediately as a right tackle or guard. His frame and strength are just too "off the charts" for me to envision him going any lower. That being said, the talk about him as a top-12 prospect is plain ridiculous.

Moving forward, Fluker's ceiling is what we have seen with Bryan Bulaga with the Green Bay Packers. This makes him a decent late first-round option for a team trading up in order to acquire a solid target at a need position.
