2013 NFL Draft: How Trading for Darrelle Revis Affects The Buccaneers Draft Strategy

Early-afternoon on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded their 2013 first-round selection, along with a 2014 conditional fourth-round pick to the New York Jets for star cornerback Darrelle Revis. Cornerback was a serious area of need for the Buccaneers after trading away their top defensive back Aqib Talib to the New England Patriots last season.

Revis immediately fills one of their top needs, and now the Buccaneers can focus on more pressing needs on days two and three. Looking at how the Revis trade affects the Buccaneers is pretty interesting when you break it down; Which is exactly what eDraft has done for you to give you a better look at how Tampa Bay will re-approach the draft now that they’ve already filled their top need.

The Buccaneers can now focus their attention to needs at interior help along the defensive line, as well as wide receiver. Tampa Bay traded Arrelious Benn to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this off-season, leaving a void to be filled opposite of stud wide receiver Mike Williams. If a player like Markus Wheaton of Oregon State, or Da’Rick Rogers of Tennessee Tech are on the board in the second round for the Buccaneers, look for them to seriously consider help out on the outside at wide receiver.

On day three, Tampa can look for depth at quarterback, running back, and offensive line but must focus their attention to the tight end position. Look for a player like San Jose State’s Ryan Otten, or Cincinnati’s Travis Kelce to be good value options if on the board in round four. The Buccaneers made out like bandits in my opinion on the Revis trade, but only time will tell. The Jets have the opportunity to turn that 13th overall selection into a star player for them, someone who’s more valuable long-term than Darrelle Revis will be, especially considering he’s recovering from a serious knee injury.
