2013 NFL Draft: Mike Glennon Scouting Report

As a second-year starter for the Wolfpack, Glennon was able to establish himself as a good replacement when Seahawk’ quarterback Russell Wilson left for Wisconsin.  Glennon passed for 7,411 yards, 63 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in his four years at North Carolina State. This past season, the Wolfpack finished the season 7-6 where he was a bright spot for this team.

Depending on which mock draft you have read Glennon has gotten anywhere from a first round to a third round grade.  As it sits, I would lean more toward the middle of those grades.  While he may not have upside of some of the more mobile quarterbacks, he has the size and the arm strength to succeed at the next level.

Positives

Pedigree: Glennon apparently has it in his blood to play quarterback being the younger brother of former Hokie quarterback Sean Glennon.  His frame makes him the prototypical size for the NFL system.  At 6’6” he will have no issues seeing over the offensive line when going through his progressions.

Decision Making: While running a pro-style offense at NC State, Glennon was exceptional in going through his progressions and will not hesitate when passing to a check down.  When the opposing defense would blitz he steps up in the pocket to attack their vacancies.

Weaknesses

Athleticism: While Glennon is a very tall quarterback, he does not have the athletic ability to outrun defensive players downfield so don’t expect him to tuck the ball and run.  While he isn’t mobile enough to challenge defenses like Wilson or Robert Griffin III he is mobile enough to run the bootleg.

Experience: While his maturation has him as a good fit in the NFL he is still really raw in terms of comparing to the other quarterbacks in the draft.  Only being a starter for two seasons when other quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Tyler Wilson started all four years at their schools.  Glennon will need to sit and learn from a more veteran signal caller.

Bottom Line

Glennon should be drafted no later than the second round. General managers will love his size and arm strength.  As far as comparing him to other quarterbacks in the NFL, Nick Foles and former Wolfpack player Philip Rivers, minus the awkward throwing motion, come to mind.
