2014 Fantasy Football Mock Draft, No. 2 Pick

In our ninth fantasy mock draft prior to the regular season, we decided to utilize the second overall pick and see where that got us.

As in all of our previous mocks, this is just to give you an idea of where specific players stand in terms of ADP and which players to expect to still be on the board in certain rounds.

As always, we us eDraft's mock draft simulator.

1. LeSean McCoy, Running Back, Philadelphia Eagles

McCoy is my No. 1 ranked fantasy player, so selecting him at second overall didn't take more than a second. McCoy ranked first in the NFL with nearly 20 touches per game. He also averaged nearly six yards per touch. With the likes of Matt Forte and Adrian Peterson directly behind McCoy as options, there really wasn't much of a choice to make here.

2. Le'Veon Bell, Running Back, Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh's passing game looks damn good at this point, but that doesn't mean that you should forget about Bell. The second-year running back averaged 22 total touches per outing in his 13 games as a rookie. While the Michigan State product only averaged 3.5 yards per touch, he still put up over 90 total yards per game.

Now entering his second season and fully healthy, the Steelers look for Bell to improve on certain aspects of his game. This means that he should get more red-zone touches, which will equate to a higher fantasy output. Bell was a high-end RB2 last year. At the very least, I am getting that production at the bottom of Round 2. You can't complain about that. It's a safe pick with some decent upside.

3. Jordy Nelson, Wide Receiver, Green Bay Packers

Nelson's production last season with Aaron Rodgers out of the lineup may be cause for alarm, but it's important to note that he still finished as a bottom-tier WR1 option and should see his numbers dramatically increase with Rodgers back in the lineup. As it is, Nelson ranked 22nd in targets but put up the 11th-most fantasy points among receivers last year. That's not bad for a WR1 option atop the third round.

4. Pierre Garcon, Wide Receiver, Washington Redskins

Unforunately, a ton of receivers went off the board immediately prior to where I was picking in this specific mock. Fortunately, Garcon was still there for me to nab a solid WR2 option. The indicators for a repeat of his performance last season just aren't there. Garcon may have ranked first in the NFL with 113 receptions, but he ranked just 13th among receivers in fantasy points and 24th in consistency.

With DeSean Jackson now opposite Garcon, there is no reason to expect him to acquire as many targets as last season. That may be a bad sign, but it's also important to note that the Redskins are expecting a healthy Robert Griffin III, something we didn't see last year. In any event, Garcon is going to be decent WR2 and that's all we need him from in the fourth round.

5. Bishop Sankey, Running Back, Tennessee Titans

Sankey put up 31 yards on six rush attempts last week against the New Orleans Saints in his second career preseason game, but he also lost a fumble. That's something that's going to have to change if the Titans are going to rely on him as a featured back in 2014. In addition to this, Shonn Greene has been impressive in camp thus far. These are two indications that Sankey's hold on the starting job (something we figured he had locked up before camp) may not longer be so tight.

With all that said, buy low on the talented young running back. He offers a tremendous amount of upside and will likely find himself in the Titans lineup some point early in the season. Add into the equation what promises to be a stout offensive line and we could be looking at a surprise RB1 performer. Low risk, high reward move in the fifth round.

6. Shane Vereen, Running Back, New England Patriots

It's always a tricky proposition to select a Bill Belichick running back. The head coach has such a short leash on players at this position that you must take a step back and seriously consider another player. With that said, the Patriots are going to employ more of a run-based offensive attack this season and Vereen is their clear No. 1 running back.

A No. 42 ranking from the running back position last season is something we simply can't look at. He played in just eight games a season ago, averaging seven yards per touch. If you're in a PPR league, Vereen's value is that much higher. He averaged six receptions per outing in 2014.

7. Kendall Wright, Wide Receiver, Tennessee Titans

Speaking of PPR leagues, Wright could very well by a dynamo in that aspect this season. He put up 94 receptions on 139 targets and proved to be the Titans No. 1 receiver. It's now all about Wright utilizing his athletic ability in the red zone. His 47:1 reception/touchdown ratio was second to only Hakeem Nicks in 2013. That's a fantasy red flag right there.

8. Colin Kaepernick, Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers

Kaepernick in the eighth round is an absolute steal. But it also puts you in a position to nab a top-tier QB2 option, which we did with Philip Rivers below. The idea here is to be able to sit Kaepernick when he goes up against some top-tier defenses in the NFC West. Outside of those games, Kaepernick should put up top-five quarterback numbers. He has the necessary weapons to succeed and the 49ers are prepared to open up their offense a tad more in 2014.

As it is, Kaepernick finished as the ninth-ranked fantasy quarterback last season. If he can provide similar numbers with more consistency, this would be a solid value pick.
