The 2014 NFL draft class appears to be a strong class, with players like Taylor Lewan and Jake Matthews, who would have been high picks in 2013, but returned to school. Adding to that mix are some very strong prospects, with as many as seven or eight with first-round potential. One of those is Florida State tackle Cameron Erving, who is one of the more intriguing players in the entire draft.
Erving has his fair share of supporters, but has plenty of detractors as well. Online scouts have his draft position anywhere from early in the first round, to the middle rounds. There’s no questioning his raw talent, but there are worries about parts of his game, and more importantly, things that he will be hard-pressed to solve, such as his frame, and his arm length. The 2013 season will be big for the Seminoles left tackle.
Athleticism is a strong point for Erving. He’s quick and light on his feet, and possesses a solid understanding of how to block, especially for a player who was at defensive tackle just a season prior. He’s also aggressive and plays with a mean streak, which NFL scouts will love. Another season learning the position will only make him stronger in terms of the mental side of things. He certainly has potential, and could skyrocket up draft boards if he continues to improve in these areas.
An area where Erving might have issues is with something he can do little about. At 6’5” and 310 lbs, he has solid size, but appears smaller than that. He could add bulk, but it could hamper his quickness, which is one of his strengths. He also has shorter than ideal arms, which could hurt against NFL defensive ends. There are experts who believe these size issues will limit him and keep him from being an elite prospect. Erving could likely add a few pounds to his frame and keep his athleticism, but help himself against power rushers. Arm length isn't something he can solve, but improving his technique will help offset that.
There is plenty of competition among offensive tackles for the top spots in the 2014 class. Cameron Erving has some work to do, but has the potential to be as good as any of them. His size, or lack thereof, could work against him, but with his athleticism and drive, he can overcome them. If he continues to improve his game, listen for his name very early in next year’s draft.
