2014 NFL Draft: Can Michael Schofield be Michigan's Second 1st Round Pick?

Plenty of fans were surprised when Michigan tackle Taylor Lewan decided to forego the NFL Draft and return to school for another year. It was widely believed that he would have been picked in the top of the first round, and he’s nearly a lock to be a top ten pick in the 2014 draft. However, Michigan has another tackle on the other side of Lewan that is very talented as well, though he gets less attention. Michael Schofield is the other bookend on the offensive line for the Wolverines, and he is working to join his ballyhooed teammate in the upcoming draft.

Schofield doesn't lack the requisite size at 6’6” and 304 lbs. He’s also athletic and light on his feet for a man with that kind of frame. The senior lineman is also solid fundamentally, possessing good footwork and enough strength to hold up to power rushers. With 23 career starts, he also has plenty of experience. Lewan gets the attention and deservedly so, but Schofield is very good in his own right.

The upcoming offensive line class looks to be tremendous, which means the competition to be taken in the first round is fierce. Schofield would have to beat out some incredible talent to go that early. Teams will likely need to see him as a potential left tackle to jump him into the first round, as right tackles generally don’t go at the top. Schofield will need to show a little more consistency as well if he wants to go that soon.

The Wolverines are nationally relevant once again, and their players will get lots of attention. Taylor Lewan is a guaranteed first rounder, so can Michael Schofield play his way into that kind of player? His talent-level is unquestionable, but as a right tackle, it will be a more difficult road. He’s got the ability to make an impact in the NFL, but getting into the first round will be a tall order.
