2014 NFL Draft: DaQuan Jones Scouting Report

Positives

Strength: Jones is incredibly strong and his bull rush is matched by few. He has the strength to destroy the middle of a pocket keeping quarterbacks from stepping up. With his ability to move into the backfield almost at will allows him to disrupt quarterbacks and running backs alike. He makes runners have to create plays and quarterbacks extend plays.

Athletic Ability: Jones is a physical freak, at six-foot three and right about 320 pounds he is a monster. Being so big you’d expect him to be more sluggish, but that isn’t the case. Jones is a very lean looking 320 pounds. He is surprisingly quick for his size and usually does a good job chasing down plays.

Versatility: Jones gets bonus points in my book because he has the makings of a hybrid, 3-4 defensive end / 4-3 defensive tackle. He has the size to command double teams in the 3-4 and the moves to win one-on-one battles in the 4-3 defense. Being able to play both types of systems looks good and keeps him from being restricted to a certain type of team.

Negatives

Tackling: The biggest problem I could find with Jones is he isn’t the greatest tackler. At best he’d be considered an average tackler. Often times he tries to arm-tackle and not wrap up. His sack total from his senior season (3) is misguiding because if he could tackle better he’d have several more.

NFL Comparison: Justin Smith, San Francisco 49ers

Jones has an incredible bull rush that makes you believe you are watching the cowboy out there on the field. Although Jones is more than likely not as strong as Smith, the way he plays the game is similar. Both are versatile, strong, and are almost always around the football.

Draft Outlook: Late First – Mid Second

The draft is loaded with talent this year, and that could hurt Jones. Look for jones to come off the board anywhere from picks 20-45 as teams will be looking to add talent to their defense. Jones is going to make some team very happy.

Best Fit: Washington Redskins

A team in transition could use a player of Jones’ caliber. Adding him to the middle of the of the defense will help their pass rushers get to the quarterbacks in the NFC East and his versatility allows for the Redskins to play both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses as they likely transition to a 4-3.
