Donte Moncrief is the definition of an athlete, and a favorite amongst the second tier of wide receivers. His measureables are off the chart, can he put it all together at the next level?
Strengths
Speed: A 4.4 40-yard dash is an incredible number, especially for someone at his size. Moncrief can easily blow past defenders, and in the NFL with a better quarterback at the helm, his speed will be utilized in the best way possible.
Acceleration: Moncrief's burst is incredible. As shown in the combine with an 11 foot broad jump, his lower half is incredible strong. On film, he gets off the line with the best of them, and pairing that with his very good long speed and he can get open in a hurry.
Potential: At just 21 years old, Moncrief has a lot of time to perfect his weaknesses, and his size/speed/explosiveness gives him some of the best potential in this year's wide receiver class. He has the speed and size of some of the top wide receivers in the game, and since he is so young, good coaching can take him to the next level.
Weaknesses
Hands: Moncief will catch the ball with his body a lot, which is a huge negative. That leads to dropped balls and lack of coming back to the ball on a curl or inside route. Rarely does he go up and steal a ball from a defender, which you would like to see a guy his size do. He does not use his hands well when elevated.
Timidity: At times, Moncrief just does not want to be physical. He is disinterested in blocking and he'll shy away from catching balls across the middle. In his first two plays against Missouri, he completely avoided contact on a crossing pattern and he dove at the legs of the return man on an interception when he could have easily tracked him down and wrapped up. On contested catches, all you have to do is get a hand or a body on him and he will not fight hard for it. He has the ability to do all of these things, just needs to do it.
NFL Comparison: Mike Wallace, Miami Dolphins
Donte Moncrief consistently looks like Mike Wallace, but is a bigger version.
Draft Outlook
In this class, Moncrief could fall to the mid-rounds. But his potential alone may land him in the top 75 with ease. You cannot teach size and speed, Moncrief has both.
Best Fits
The former Rebel has a lot of potential, so landing with a team that has a veteran presence at wide receiver would be great for his growth. A team like Baltimore, New England, New Orleans, San Francisco or Seattle would be perfect for him.
