2014 NFL Draft: Early Look at Potential Draft Order Based on Week 1 of Preseason

32) San Francisco 49ers:

San Francisco is the symbol of what happens when you draft well and develop players and it has all led up to the 49ers being perennial Super Bowl contenders. You can always count on Trent Baalke to find gems and draft well and he will do it again.

Baalke will need to find more help for the 49ers secondary and receiver where the lone question marks stand for the 49ers. Carlos Rogers body has caught up with him and his play is starting to suffer. While this team has plenty of depth to back him up, they still need a young player who can take his place for the future. San Francisco could choose to take the top corner available or if A.J. Jenkins fails to produce in his sophomore season, the team could look for his replacement.

31) Denver Broncos:

The Broncos are the best team in the AFC and should make it to the Super Bowl, but the nightmares they have at night of the playoff game vs. Baltimore will have an impact on the draft.

Denver’s secondary was exposed last season and even after signing Quentin Jammer and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie it is still a need.  They need a corner who can keep up with faster receivers and knows how to jump up and deflect passes. The man for the job could be Aaron Colvin, who has the speed and awareness to keep the nightmare from happening again.

30) Seattle Seahawks:

The Seahawks found a gem last year when they drafted quarterback Russell Wilson and their confidence in him led Seattle to a deep playoff run. But even after trading for Percy Harvin, Wilson needs more weapons.

There are two tight ends in this class who stand out as first round prospects.  Jenkins and Colt Lyerla would both bring more athleticism to this team. Lyerla is an excellent receiver who could become a go-to guy in the red zone for Wilson. The Seahawks are set everywhere else and would be nearly unstoppable with Lyerla at tight end.

29) Cincinnati Bengals:

The breakout team for me this year is the Cincinnati Bengals, and I think they can make it all the way to the AFC Championship. Even with a late pick, the Bengals can find great value and fill a need.

Ask any Bengals fan and they can immediately tell you how badly they want to get Rey Maualuga to the sidelines. Cincinnati will be looking to find his replacement and could have their choice between Shayne Skov and Trey Depriest. Both players could start immediately for the Bengals at middle linebacker and end the Maualuga era.

28) New England Patriots:

The Patriots have questions as they head into the 2013 season about their receivers, but we all know Tom Brady has a tendency to make average receivers look special.

The Patriots have built a great offensive line and defense, leaving their big need to be at receiver where a gift could fall to them. De’Anthony Thomas could fall to the end of the first round simply because he is short, but when you watch him play there are few as electrifying. All Brady needs to do is get the ball in his hands and Thomas can do the rest.

27) Green Bay Packers:

As long as the Green Bay Packers have Aaron Rodgers at quarterback will be contenders for the Super Bowl.  The defense is a big question mark heading into the season, but there are still needs on offense.

If Jermichael Finley struggles again this season, Green Bay will let the impending free agent walk in free agency. That will leave a big hole at tight end but fortunately for the Packers a great prospect falls right into their laps. Austin Seferian-Jenkins comes with off-field questions, but that hasn’t stopped Thompson before. His talent would instantly make him a top target for Rodgers and make the Packers offense scary.

26) Atlanta Falcons:

Atlanta was just yards shy of a trip to the Super Bowl and the taste is now there for them to do it again. The offense is loaded for Matt Ryan with Julio Jones, Roddy White and Steven Jackson but the defense still stands in his way.

Peria Jerry never worked out for the Falcons and if he has another disappointing season in 2013, they won’t hesitate to move on. Improving on the interior defensive line will be a main priority for Atlanta in 2014. One name they could have their eye on is Will Sutton who is a top talent but falls because of his size. It would give the Falcons a boost on the defensive line and could help them become a Super Bowl favorite.

25) Houston Texans:
Houston has done an excellent job drafting the past few seasons, drafting players like J.J. Watt, Ben Tate and Whitney Mercilus. While the defense continues to build, the Texans passing attack still has questions.

Matt Schaub will be entering his seventh season as the Texans starting quarterback in 2014 and will be 34. While Schuab has done a nice job helping the Texans win some games, he also has prevented them from taking the next step to becoming Super Bowl contenders. If Houston fails to make it to the AFC Championship in 2013, they could look at drafting a top quarterback in the draft and prepare for the future.

24) New Orleans Saints:

The Saints will be back in 2013 thanks to the return of Sean Payton and he will help lead them to another postseason trip. But despite the great numbers they put up on offense, the defense needs a lot of work.

The number one priority for the Saints has to be improving at outside linebacker and getting Will Smith out of that spot. Rex Ryan brings a new 3-4 defense but Smith simply can’t play outside linebacker and it will be a nightmare. The Saints absolutely need to draft an outside linebacker next year and the first round is loaded with them.

23) Baltimore Ravens:

The defending Super Bowl champions will have a tough time repeating this season, but this is still a very talented football team. While people focus on the losses of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed they were able to fill those voids.

In the middle of the first, I think you could see the Ravens go for another receiver. Someone who can start opposite of Torrey Smith and give Joe Flacco another weapon to work with. The Ravens need someone who can pick up first downs and a receiver who knows how to run routes. The perfect match could be Jordan Matthews who could have an impact right away.

22) Dallas Cowboys:

The Cowboys could finally snap their streak of failing to make the playoffs, but they still need to make more improvements on defense before they can be serious contenders.

The new switch to the 4-3 defense means Demarcus Ware will have his hand in the dirt, but once again Anthony Spencer will be a free agent. The team can barely afford to franchise Spencer for a third straight season and instead could look to fill his void with the draft. It would save the team salary that can be used on the offensive line and will help build a younger defense.

21) Indianapolis Colts:

Everyone is keeping their eye on the Colts and for good reason, general manager Ryan Grigson is starting to build a perennial-contender in the AFC.  But before the Colts can reach that goal, they need to improve defensively.

While the Colts hope Erik Walden can be the answer for them at outside linebacker, they will be disappointed early on and start looking for his replacement. That man could be Kyle Van Noy who would give the Colts a top pass rusher. Add Van Noy to a defense that invested a first-round pick in Bjoern Werner would give Indianapolis a promising future.

20) New York Giants:

After a disappointing season in 2012, the New York Giants hope 2013 can be a turnaround year. The future looks bright for the Giants on offense, but their defense still needs work.

The biggest need for the Giants will be at inside linebacker, where they continue to bring in former draft stars turned draft busts. It’s time for them to invest their own draft picks at inside linebacker and they could do that in 2014. While Mosley may not fall they could grab someone like AJ Johnson or another linebacker.

19) St. Louis Rams:

The Rams can once again look at going best player available with their second top twenty pick. In the offseason, they addressed needs at receiver, tight end and left tackle to help support Sam Bradford

St. Louis could also explore trading one or both of its picks to move up or down the draft board to bring in more talent and depth for this young team. The Rams are in perfect position to maneuver around to find whatever is best for their football team.

18) Kansas City Chiefs:

It has been said before, but the Kansas City Chiefs may be the most talented team ever to have the top pick. A team loaded with first round draft picks on both sides of the ball; the Chiefs have a bright future.

While the Chiefs should have a turnaround year in 2013, they still need to address some needs on the defensive line. Tyson Jackson just isn’t getting it done for Kansas City and it may be time to find his replacement. Aaron Lynch transferred to South Florida but with a strong season could emerge into a top fifteen pick.

17) St. Louis Rams (via WAS):

St. Louis continues to build through the draft thanks to the help of the monster haul they received from the Redskins and will benefit from that again in 2014.

The Rams could just go best player available with their first-round picks and that is a strategy that has worked well for them before. The team still needs to figure out who their starting running back is and if that question still remains in 2014, they could take a running back in the first round. St. Louis could also look to improve at inside linebacker if a player like Mosley were on the board.

16) Chicago Bears:

The Bears had an excellent offseason with the additions of Martellus Bennett and Jermon Bushrod to fill needs, but age is catching up to them on defense and they need to start finding replacements.

Charles Tillman is still a great cornerback and one of the best in the league but he will be 34 next season and could help mentor his successor. The Bears also play in a division featuring Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Calvin Johnson and definitely could use more help in the secondary.

15) Pittsburgh Steelers:

For years the Pittsburgh Steelers were known for their hard-hitting, shutdown defense, which led them to two Super Bowl appearances. But age has caught up with this team and they need to start preparing for the future.

Cornerback will be a major need for Steelers, with Ike Taylor turning 34 before the 2014 season along with Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark nearing their retirement age. Pittsburgh needs to address its secondary in the draft next year and could target a cornerback or safety in the first round.

14) Detroit Lions:

Detroit has quickly assembled its defensive line of the future with Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley and Ezekiel Ansah. But they need more help on defense.

While teams in front of them load up on tackles and pass rushers, the Lions take advantage by going with the top linebacker on the board. A linebacker like CJ Mosley would be a huge addition to this defense and make it one of the best in the league.

13) Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

The Buccaneers are a team on the rise with young stars scattered across the roster on both sides of their roster. But they could still use some help on the outside of both lines.

Picking at 13, many of the top offensive tackles will be off the board but that could mean a great opportunity to grab a defensive end. While Stephon Tuitt was overshadowed last year by Manti Te’o he is still a great player who alongside Gerald McCoy would be a nightmare for opposing teams.

12) Miami Dolphins:

The Dolphins traded up in the 2013 Draft to land Dion Jordan to help bolster their front seven, but they may not have to do that in 2014 with the strong class of linemen.

The Dolphins have solidified their defensive line but on the inside could face some problems. Randy Starks and Paul Soliai will be a free agents next year in search of new deals. Miami could look to save money and fill its need at defensive tackle in the draft. The Dolphins could also look to add a left tackle in a very deep class.

11) Minnesota Vikings:

This Vikings were carried by Adrian Peterson to the playoffs last year, and would love for him to do that again in 2013. But because of questions at quarterback and on defense, I don’t see that happening.

If Minnesota fails to make the playoffs and after signing Greg Jennings and drafting Cordarrelle Patterson, it likely will be looking for a new quarterback. The 2014 quarterback class offers. If Boyd is there, the Vikings should jump at the chance to take him. If Boyd is not there, the team could also take Brett Hundley as their quarterback of the future.

10) Carolina Panthers:

This may come as a surprise to some who are expecting a breakout year for the Carolina Panthers, but I don’t see a good football team. Cam Newton is a potential superstar but this team has question marks almost everywhere.

If a top receiver were available, I would expect the Panthers to jump at the chance to give Newton a top weapon to work with. Someone who can learn from Steve Smith while playing opposite of him and helping Newton become a better passer.

If the Panthers can’t land a receiver I believe they would certainly look to address their need for a cornerback. It is without a doubt their most important need on defense and a corner like Roby would help them in the pass-heavy NFC South.

9) Cleveland Browns:

The Browns have done an excellent job building their defense with young players like Joe Haden, Barkevious Mingo and Phil Taylor.  The defense should be set for years, but the offense still needs work.

If Cleveland ends up with a top ten pick, it will be time to move on from Brandon Weeden who will be 31 midway through the 2014 season. While it would only be Weeden’s third season, his age would play a huge factor and the Browns may want to draft a quarterback. Tajh Boyd has all the tools to be a top ten selection and with a strong season could solidify his case and be the Browns pick.

The Browns could also look to make more improvements on the offensive line and take one of the top four offensive tackles. If Antonio Richardson has a strong season, he could push himself into the top ten and find himself in Cleveland.

8) Buffalo Bills:

Buffalo is a team on the rise and even as this season could be another step in rebuilding, it is certainly going to be a bright future. After drafting E.J. Manuel in the first round and loading up on receivers, the team can now focus on the defensive side of the ball.

Even after signing Mario Williams a year ago, the team could go best player available and take a pass rusher. Anthony Barr had a breakout year for UCLA last season and continues to improve his stock into a top ten pick. Barr could start opposite of Williams and give the Bills defense a more consistent pass rush.

If Barr is gone, the Bills may look to improve their secondary and find another cornerback to play with Stephon Gilmore. If Roby is available for the Bills, they shouldn’t hesitate to take him. We saw their options during the preseason and the need is evident.

7) San Diego Chargers:

The San Diego Chargers are starting to lean towards a rebuild, but hope Phillip Rivers can lift the team back to the promise land.  Unfortunately, there are too many questions on the roster and they will find themselves with a top ten pick.

The Chargers have plenty of needs on offense and if a top receiver were to fall to them at the seventh pick, they could scoop him up and build their receiving core. They drafted Keenan Allen this year but Danario Alexander has a torn ACL and Malcolm Floyd could have a significant injury. Receiver is a big need for this team and could be addressed in 2014.

San Diego’s biggest need on offense though is the offensive line and the perfect match could be found. The Chargers spent their 2013 first-round pick on DJ Fluker, and could upgrade at left tackle with his former teammate from Alabama in Kouandjio. The improvements on the offensive line would only help Rivers and Ryan Mathews improve their play.

6) Arizona Cardinals:

The Arizona Cardinals have a bright future with Bruce Arians coaching the team and a young, improving defense they are starting to put the pieces together for a strong future. But questions remain on the offensive side of the football.

Carson Palmer is a nice short-term quarterback plan for them, but the team needs to make preparations for their future quarterback. Without a doubt the biggest need for this team comes on the offensive line. After bolstering their receivers and defense through the draft, they can now focus on improving at left tackle.

The decision will likely come down to whomever is the best left tackle prospect on the board. Lewan or Matthews would be a major upgrade over Levin Brown, but if both prospects are gone they can take Cyrus Kouandjio who also has a bright future. The improvement on the offensive line will only help their quarterback of the future.

5) Tennessee Titans:

Another year with a top ten pick for the Tennessee Titans and with it comes plenty of changes on offense and with the coaching staff. Tennessee could try and get a quarterback but with the question marks surrounding the group, it could look elsewhere.

After upgrading their interior offensive line this past offseason, the Titans could shift to improve at left tackle. The decision could come down to Jake Matthews and Taylor Lewan. Matthews will play left tackle for the first time this season but was stellar on the right side last year, while Lewan has experience at left tackle. An offensive line with Matthews along with Chance Warmack and Andy Levitre would be incredible

4) Philadelphia Eagles:

Chip Kelly would love to improve his secondary, which already looks like a gaping hole for this defense. But could he pass up on a top weapon to bring into this offense and help out his quarterback.

The Eagles already lost Jeremy Maclin for the season and Maclin will be a free agent in 2014. DeSean Jackson is set to have a breakout season but outside of him, the group really needs work. If one of Watkins or Lee were available at the fourth pick, it could be just what Kelly is seeking for his offense.

If Philadelphia wanted to address their secondary, it could go after cornerback Bradley Roby who would give the team an immediate upgrade in the secondary. While Roby comes with some off-the-field concerns he could help bring more balance to this defense.

3) New York Jets:

If the New York Jets end up holding the third pick, you can guarantee head coach Rex Ryan will be looking for a new job and Mark Sanchez will be gone. Geno Smith will be the quarterback of the future but the receivers in New York are hardly weapons.

The debate for which receiver to take with the third pick could come down to Marqise Lee and Sammy Watkins. Both players are 6’1 receivers who can help Smith feel more comfortable with their ability to turn a short play into a touchdown or stretch the field.

New York could also take a look at outside linebacker Anthony Barr to bolster their defense. Barr would join a front seven that includes Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson as the Jets start to put together their defense for the future.

2) Jacksonville Jaguars:

While the Jacksonville Jaguars have plenty of needs, they would be ecstatic with whichever prospect falls to them with the second pick. Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent and while running back is a need, they need to upgrade at quarterback and improve their pass rush.

If Clowney falls to them at the second pick, he would uplift a Jacksonville defense that was last in the NFL with just 20 sacks. There is a chance Clowney could arrive and account for more than half of that on his own as a rookie. The Jaguars would pick up the best defensive prospect in decades and would be perfect for Gus Bradley’s defense.

If Jacksonville is left with Bridgewater at the second pick, they won’t hesitate to make their selection with their quarterback of the future. Blaine Gabbert has never developed and could soon be on his way out and Chad Henne is nothing more than a backup quarterback. Bridgewater would already have a strong offensive line to protect him and weapons like Justin Blackmon to work with.

1) Oakland Raiders:

The Oakland Raiders are the worst team in football right now and the roster needs a major overhaul. You could look at any position on this team and point out where they can immediately upgrade at with the help of the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

If the Raiders end up with the top selection, then we know Matt Flynn did not work out at all for this team. Even with Terrelle Pryor and Tyler Wilson on the roster, they would love to take a potential elite quarterback prospect like Teddy Bridgewater

Most years Bridgewater would be the top pick, but the 2014 class is special because of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Could the Raiders pass on a player who is considered to be the #Andrew Luck# of defensive prospects, that is a decision they would have to wrestle with on draft day.
