2014 NFL Draft: Glaring Team Needs Based on First Four Weeks of Preseason

Well the preseason is over and rosters are essentially set for the season opener this weekend. Teams have had a chance to see the good and bad about their team, to see players step up and to see players fail to live up to expectations and to see players get injured. Some teams still have some big question marks about them and probably won’t be able to address them until next offseason. I feel like I’ve named the same needs over and over, so this week we will take a look at a few needs that I haven’t hit on yet.

Pittsburgh Steelers – Tight End

Heath Miller is coming off of a brutal knee injury and will be 31 this October. After Miller they have little on their depth chart. Matt Spaeth and David Johnson are better at blockers than pass receivers. Miller is a huge part of how Ben Roethlisberger likes to play and keeping a good tight end presence on the team is very important to the Steelers offensive game.

Miami Dolphins – Tight End

The Dolphins don’t have much at the tight end position. Last years starter, Anthony Fasano, is in Kansas City and Dustin Keller had a bad knee injury this preseason. Charles Clay and Michael Egnew are the Dolphins top two tight ends, but neither are great options. A reliable tight end could be a huge help in the development of Ryan Tannehill, giving him a security blanket to fall back on.

Green Bay Packers – Offensive Tackles

Often times I wonder if current Packers General Manager Ted Thompson is attempting to kill Aaron Rodgers for something. The Packers haven’t protected Rodgers well at all the last few years and this year doesn’t seem to be any better. After a couple of injuries, rookie David Bakhtiari is starting at left tackle. If Rodgers goes down, the Packers might be the worst team in that division.

Philadelphia Eagles – Wide Receiver

Jeremy Maclin went down with a season ending knee injury in the preseason and he is in a contract year. After DeSean Jackson, the Eagles don’t have a lot at the receiver position. Adding an elite receiver to that offense would take it to the next level. Jackson is a playmaker, but he isn’t exactly what I would call a true number one receiver either.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Tight End

The Buccs have a huge hole at tight end. Luke Stocker isn’t the answer there and after him all they have is Tom Crabtree and Nate Byham. Josh Freeman is as up and down as a quarterback can be, but a pass catching tight end that can make the tough catches would be a huge boost for him. Rumor has it that the Buccs were going to take Tyler Eifert in this past draft before they traded for Darrelle Revis.

Dallas Cowboys – Defensive End

This isn’t so much about the Cowboys defensive ends playing poorly as it is their age and contract status. Demarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer aren’t getting any younger and Spencer is only signed through this year. Kyle Wilber and George Selvie are the only other ends on the roster and neither are starter material.

Carolina Panthers – Cornerback

The Panthers front seven seems to be shaping up very nicely, but their defensive backfield is a huge question mark. Chris Gamble decided to retire after this past season and it left them without a number one cornerback. Captain Munnerlyn is better suited as a slot corner and Josh Thomas is their number two. They are going to need a lot of pressure from their front seven this season to help their secondary.

San Francisco 49ers – Cornerback

The 49ers pass defense down the stretch wasn’t very good and was part of the reason they didn’t end up winning the Super Bowl. They signed Nnamdi Asomugha this offseason, but he didn’t show much in Philadelphia to believe he will be a huge help. Carlos Rogers is owed six million next season and seven million the season after that, while Asamough and Tarell Brown have contracts that are up after this season.
