Week 3 of the NFL season is in the books and as always things went great for some teams and things fell off the tracks for others. Some teams like the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks are looking like Super Bowl contenders while others such as the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking like Bridgewater Bowl contenders. Most teams have visible needs, but some teams have needs that are glaring to everyone. Let us take a look at those teams with glaring needs.
Buffalo Bills: Offensive Line
E.J. Manuel didn’t stand a chance in his game Sunday against the Jets pass rush because of the poor offensive line play. Manuel was sacked eight times by the Jets, really killing a lot of the Bills drives and hurting the offense. They lost offensive guard Andy Levitre in the offseason to the Tennessee Titans this offseason and his loss shows. If they can’t protect Manuel any better it’s going to be a long season for both Manuel and the Bills.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Quarterback
The Jaguars are a really bad team and it all starts at the quarterback position. Blaine Gabbert didn’t play well at all and then he went down with an injury. Many people thought that Chad Henne would be a better option, but he hasn’t been any better than Gabbert. The Jaguars have some weapons on offense, but without a quarterback getting them the ball they can’t make plays. Luckily for the Jaguars they are the leaders for the Teddy Bridgewater Bowl.
New England Patriots: Offensive Playmakers
I’ve never seen Tom Brady as frustrated with his team as I have these first three weeks of the season. Brady hasn’t looked as good as he normally does, but his receivers aren’t getting open and even if they do they are dropping as many balls as they are catching. The running game is playing well and the defense has been pretty good, but in order for Brady to be as good as he can be and for the Patriots to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders, they have to have some weapons for Brady.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Run Game
So far the Steelers run game has been worse than pitiful. However, help may be coming next week. Reports out there are that the Steelers plan on playing Le’Veon Bell next week in his first game of the year. Bell was drafted in the second round of this past draft to be the Steelers starting back. He got hurt in preseason and many thought he would be out until at least mid-season, if not the whole season. The fact that Bell is coming back may be the answer they are looking for to give them balance on offense, but if that line doesn’t step up even Bell won’t matter.
Washington Redskins: Secondary
The bad play of Robert Griffin III has been the talk of the Redskins for the first three weeks, but what is more damaging to their team than that is the bad play of their defense. More specifically, the bad play of their secondary. They cannot stop anyone and until they can, they aren’t going to go anywhere no matter how well RGIII can play. The NFC East is a bad division top to bottom and if the secondary can step it up, the Redskins are a contender for the division title.
New York Giants: Defense
I could just put a whole new team as the need for the Giants, but they have a lot of talent on offense even if it hasn’t looked like it. However, on the defensive side of the ball they have been terrible. Their defensive line isn’t getting any pressure on the quarterback, they are 24th in yards per game given up, but they are dead last in points per game given up. Now some of that can be attributed to the amount of turnovers their offense has, but at some point the defense has to step up.
Philadelphia Eagles: Offensive Line
The Eagles offensive line has already given up 11 sacks, which is good for 29th in the NFL. Justin Houston had 4.5 sacks himself in their Thursday night game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles offense is explosive if they can get time to make plays. The Eagles have a ton of playmakers on offense, but Michael Vick needs time to let DeSean Jackson use his speed and get down the field. LeSean McCoy has been having big games, but if Vick can get the passing game going it will open up things for McCoy even more.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Quarterback
We may be seeing the final game of the Josh Freeman era in Tampa Bay very soon. After a fantastic year two years ago, he just hasn’t been the same quarterback. His accuracy is gone, he isn’t making big plays down the field and he isn’t winning games. The Bucs have Mike Glennon on the bench, but he seems very much a Freeman clone to me. He has a big arm, but he isn’t overly accurate and his decision making isn’t where it needs to be. If neither Freeman nor Glennon step up, the Bucs will be taking a new quarterback next year.
Editor's Note: Freeman has been benched in favor of Glennon
