Another week of NFL games in the books and another week of victories and failures to analyze. Some teams looked like Super Bowl contenders and some teams look like they are going to play in the Bridgewater Bowl. Every team has some flaws, but some are far worse than others. Let’s take a look at the teams with the major flaws and just what those glaring needs are.
New England Patriots – Wide Receivers
Tom Brady might be the greatest quarterback of all time, but even he is getting frustrated with the receivers he has to throw to right now. The Patriots have barely squeaked by against two teams that the Patriots should have blown out. With Rob Gronkowski out and Aaron Hernandez no longer on the team, Brady has really ran out of weapons. They have a couple of young guys with talent in Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins, but they need more consistency.
Pittsburgh Steelers – Offensive Playmakers
The Pittsburgh Steelers offense is the worst I can remember seeing it in a long, long time. I’m not sure I have ever seen the Steelers running game as bad as it is right now. If the Steelers don’t get some offense soon, they will be one of the worst teams in the AFC. Ben Roethlisberger isn’t getting any younger and neither are Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor. The Steelers window may be closing and if they don’t get some playmakers in here on offense, it may be shut already.
Cleveland Browns – Running Back
In an absolute stunning move, the Cleveland Browns traded Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2014 first round pick. This leaves Chris Ogbonnaya as their starting running back unless they sigh a free agent. The Browns are going to need a strong running game with the lack of talent at the quarterback position. Richardson was the only offensive playmaker on the team during the first two weeks of the season with Pro Bowl talent.
Indianapolis Colts – Defense
With the trade for Trent Richardson the Colts are set up very nicely at the quarterback and skill positions, though the offensive line could still use quite a bit of work. However, the defense is what concerns me the most. They don’t have a lot of talent to build upon for the future. Bjoern Werner and Vontae Davis are nice building blocks, but they need more than that.
Washington Redskins – Secondary
The Washington Redskins and their powerful offense won’t mean a whole lot if they can’t sure up their secondary some. So far this year in two games they have given up 71 points. The Redskins have some nice pass rushers in Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan, but if the coverage can’t give them any time they won’t be able to make much of an impact. The Redskins drafted some guys in this past draft, but they haven’t helped much yet. David Amerson and Bacarri Rambo do have talent, but it’s hard for a rookie to make huge impact.
Green Bay Packers – Offensive Line
Every year I look at the Packers offensive line and every year I wonder if GM Ted Thompson secretly hates Aaron Rodgers for some reason unbeknownst to us. Every year Rodgers gets hit and hit and hit again behind the line. One of those times, if he gets hit wrong and hurt, the Packers season will be over. Rodgers is the best quarterback in the league and it should be a crime not to protect him better.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Quarterback
Josh Freeman looked like such a promising young quarterback just two years ago, but fast forward to today and it just doesn’t look like that anymore. He is inaccurate and just isn’t leading the Buccs to wins anymore. Add in that it is the last year of his contract and there is a good chance he won’t be back with the Buccs next year. They drafted Mike Glennon in the third round of this past draft, but he just doesn’t look like a franchise quarterback either.
Carolina Panthers – Secondary
The Panthers secondary was already a concern last season before Chris Gamble retired, before this season started and things are looking even worse now. Charles Godfrey was put on injured reserves with an Achilles injury and Josh Thomas is questionable next week with a concussion. The Panthers front seven is among the best in the league, led by Pro Bowler Luke Kuechly and rookie defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. If the Panthers can get some secondary help, their defense would be among the best in the league.
