Stengths:

Size: Jace Amaro is the prototypical size that most coaches want in a tight end. Smaller corners and safeties will have trouble dealing with his size. At 6’5” tall Amaro will be able to go over the top of most defensive backs.

Speed: Amaro moves really well for a guy his size. At the NFL Combine he ran a 4.74 40 time. Which showed Amaro wasn’t the fastest guy on the field, but he is fast enough to be a matchup issue. The thing that he does well is get beyond the linebackers to allow his quarterback to get the ball in his hands and move the chains along.

Hands: With being a big bodied target one question about Amaro is he a body catcher? The answer to that question is no. Amaro uses his hands very well snagging the ball out of the air. Aside from the catching aspect, Amaro uses his hands well blocking downfield. Unlike the traditional tight ends like Eric Ebron, Amaro does play the traditional inline position, but still does well blocking from the slot position.

Weaknesses:

Shedding Tacklers: One thing that stands out when watching Amaro on film is the fact that he doesn’t break through tackles. As big and powerful as he is, Amaro isn’t able to fight through tackles as one would hope. That isn’t to say he is incapable but bigger defenders will pose an issue for him to shed.

Contested Catches: In today’s game a tight end must make the contested catches. Unfortunately this isn’t something that Amaro can do on a consistent basis. In order to be the go to target for any quarterback Amaro will need to focus on matching the tough catches.

NFL Comparison

To cast a more accurate comparison I had to go with two players. Often times in the passing game he shows similarities to Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys and in the blocking aspect Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints. He is a chain mover and at times an adequate blocker.

Draft Outlook

In today’s NFL two tight ends has become a focus of many teams. One can fully expect Amaro to go towards the end of the first round. New England is where he is most often mocked with their need of another tight end with the loss of Aaron Hernandez.
