Positives
Vision: Carey has shown tremendous vision while running at Arizona. He can take a handoff and find the hole quickly, allowing himself to find cutback lanes when his initial hole isn’t there. He has the ability to put his foot in the ground and hit the hole quickly. Careys vision often allows him to make a cutback and make something out of nothing.
Passing Game: Carey has shown that he has very good hands out of the backfield. He has also proven to be a good route runner out of the backfield. He will be an additional passing weapon for any team that drafts him. On top of that, Carey is a willing and able blocker who can get physical with a block or deliver a cut block. Carey has the ability to be a three down running back in the NFL.
Yards After Contact: Carey seems to pick up yards after contact after every play and he does it in a variety of ways. Carey is a tough runner to bring down because he always keeps his legs pumping, pushing defenders back to gain yards. On top of that, he almost always falls forward, gaining a few extra yards on each run. Carey also has a spin move that he will use to get off of hits and pick up extra yards.
Negatives
Speed: Carey isn’t going to be a guy who blows by the defense and isn’t caught. His top end speed isn’t great and he won’t break a ton of long touchdown runs. With the way the NFL is shifting, teams may want guys who are breakaway players and Carey will never be that.
Running Style: Carey is a physical runner who tries to break every tackle. At some point that is going to cause his body to break down and injuries to start occurring. Carey needs to start knowing when to just go down and live to play another day and when to fight for the extra yards. He already has a lot of wear on his legs and you don’t want to add a lot of unnecessary contact.
NFL Comparison: Ahmad Bradshaw
Carey is a tough, physical runner who always tries for the extra yards much like Bradshaw does. Both are also assets in the passing game who will help their quarterback out. Also, if Carey doesn’t start learning when to pick his spots to fight for every years he may end up being often injured, much like Bradshaw is.
Draft Outlook
Carey looks to be one of the first few running backs taken in the draft. With the way the running back market has fallen the last few years, he should be taken sometime between the mid-second round and the early-third round. He can come in right away and start in a backfield or be a third-down back.
Best Fit
New York Giants: Ahmad Bradshaw was a very good running back for the New York Giants and if they can get a similar player it makes a lot of sense. The Giants like to run screen passes to their backs and Carey is one of the best screen backs in the draft and would really fit what the Giants like to do.
