2014 NFL Draft: Mike Evans Scouting Report

This wide receiver class is one of the best we have ever seen, and Mike Evans is among the top few at the position. Evans is seen as a sure-fire first round pick, here is why.

College: Texas A&M
Ht: 6046
Wt: 231 pounds

Strengths

Hands: Mike Evans is one of the only players in this class that possesses sure hands almost anywhere on the field. He rarely drops a pass, yet still comes down with some ridiculous catches along the sidelines.

Size: Obviously at just under 6'5, his size is going to be an advantage, but it is not just his body, it is the way he uses his size. So many prospects before him have had incredible size, but did not know how to use it. Evans knows he is big, and uses it to his advantage. He will use his frame to shield defenders from being able to get to the ball, and uses his body to come back to the ball without sacrificing yardage.

Jumping ability: If you watched the Alabama vs. Texas A&M game, you know exactly what I am talking about. Evans was able to go up and get the ball with the best in the country, and that bodes well at the next level. Some guys are too talented to get the ball through in the NFL, but Evans can go up and get it over top of these players, and that cannot be taught.

Weaknesses

At times, Mike Evans tends to disappear. Now, this can be attributed to his age (just 20 years old) and maturity, but it still happens. Four catches for eight yards against Missouri, four catches for 46 yards against Ole Miss, and four catches for 51 yards against LSU. Now, those are just the numbers, but at times in these games he looks disinterested and frustrated. Against Missouri his frustration showed, and as an opposing corner, that is all you need to get in

NFL Comparison

Vincent Jackson with better hands. Jackson is one of the biggest matchup problems for NFL teams down the field, but at times he will struggle with drops. Evans has very sure hands, but does not possess as much breakaway speed that Jackson does. Overall, Evans is a better prospect than Vincent Jackson, and that should explain how good he really is.

Draft Outlook

As mentioned before, Mike Evans will be one of the first three wide receivers taken, and could go inside the top 10.

Best Fits

The best fit for Evans is in Detroit across from Calvin Johnson, but he could also land with the Rams, Browns, or even a team like the Ravens if he falls that far.
