This past weekend saw several quarterbacks really help their draft stock. LSU’s Zach Mettenberger, Georgia’s Aaron Murray and Utah State’s Chuckie Keeton all had big performances. Mettenberger’s ability to come up big in a hostile environment might have been the most impressive.
Out of the three quarterbacks mentioned, Mettenberger has the highest upside and the most likely to work his way into the first round. He uses his combination of good size and a strong throwing arm to make plays all over the field. However, it’s the way he has taken to the coaching of Cam Cameron that really stands out.
Keeton continues to improve his overall game each and every week. Against San Jose State, he outdueled David Fales showing good accuracy and a powerful arm.
The big matchup in the trenches his week was Oklahoma’s Gabe Ikard against Notre Dame’s Louis Nix. This was a well fought battle, but Ikard got the best of Nix on more than a few occasions. Ikard used his quickness and leverage to control Nix’s movements.
There were even a few plays where Ikard was able to put Nix on his back. This performance puts Ikard in the leader’s seat to be the first center off the board.
Buffalo’s Khalil Mack remains in good position to come off the board in the early part of the first round. His ability to make plays all over the field and in the opponent’s backfield has been extremely impressive. He has the potential to develop into one of the better players to come out of this draft class.
