2014 NFL Draft: Should the Minnesota Vikings Replace Christian Ponder With a 2014 Quarterback?

The Minnesota Vikings shocked the NFL world in 2012 by finishing with a 10-6 record and a trip to the postseason. They were led by a dominating running game featuring the league’s best running back: Adrian Peterson. Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards and came just a few yards from breaking the record for the most rushing yards ever in one season. This number was made all the more amazing when taking into account that the rest of the offensive output was minimal. Teams knew Peterson was getting the ball, and just couldn't stop him.

Christian Ponder, the team’s quarterback, completed 62% of his passes for 2,935 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His stat line doesn't look bad, but Vikings fans know that he hasn't been as impressive as the stat line suggests. After a red hot start, he struggled with consistency and has fans worried that he might have already peaked as a passer. Though he made the playoffs in his first full season as a starter, many believe that the franchise should be ready to move on.

The Vikings have made an effort to add weapons this offseason. Wide receiver Greg Jennings was added via free agency, while Cordarrelle Patterson was selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Ponder should benefit from having more play-makers around him, especially with Peterson demanding so much attention. If they can get consistent quarterback play from Ponder, they could once again be a playoff threat. Ponder is going into just his third NFL season, and second as a starter. Physically, he might have peaked, but he should be mentally stronger.

The 2013 season will be key for Ponder. He improved in every category last season, but his detractors say he isn't good enough. However, he has shown an ability to grow, and his physical tools are good, though not great. There’s no reason to believe he won’t improve in certain areas this season, especially with his decision-making. Drafting a new quarterback doesn't automatically equate to improvement, and the Vikings would be better served to continue adding pieces around their young starter. Ponder might never be elite, but he can get better, and that should be good enough.
