2014 NFL Draft: Teams Potentially Looking To Move Up For A Quarterback

The NFL Draft is all about value.  It does not matter if you are selecting first overall,  20th overall,  100th overall or 230th – when is the right time to select your targets before your rivals do without overpaying?

Quarterback is the most sought after position and every year up to six teams can be vying for the leagues next star.  Sometimes,  the player can fall right into your lap but rarely is life so kind.  Come draft day teams will be moving up and down the board to get their man.  So,  who will be moving back into the first round this year should one of the top prospects drop?

If you were to read recent reports you would be under the impression Teddy Bridgewater and Derek Carr are most likely to fall into the lower half of the second round as Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel are nabbed early on.

It is fair to say that the Houston Texans,  Jacksonville Jaguars,  Cleveland Browns,  Oakland Raiders,  Minnesota Vikings and the Tennessee Titans could be looking for a long-term option at the position.  Personally,  I believe the Browns and Jaguars will get their quarterback early in the first round while the remaining could be poised to strike at any time.

All four have a second round pick which can be packaged with a later pick to jump back into the top 32 selections and manoeuvre around the draft board to their liking.  However,  the Oakland Raiders signed Matt Schaub in the off-season and,  despite not setting the world alight in Houston,  he has enough in his locker to warrant a chance.  I would look for the Raiders to select a quarterback in the middle rounds where good value is to be had on players who suffered injuries late in their collegiate careers.

That leaves the Titans,  who have Ken Whisenhunt at the Helm for his first season,  the  Vikings,  who must select a quarterback after failing to win with Matt Cassel and former first-round pick Christian Ponder last time around,  and the Texans who recently signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to compete for a starting role.  The Texans have the most need for a quarterback but they hold the first-overall selection and can shore up their pass rush for years by selecting once in a lifetime prospect Jadeveon Clowney.

With the draft deep in talent look for teams with franchise quarterbacks such as the Chargers,  Panthers and Saints contact potential suitors about moving down and accumulating picks.  Teams moving up must be weary of the Broncos and Patriots who, despite possessing the best two signal callers in the game, could be looking for their heirs to the throne.
