2014 NFL Draft: Teddy Bridgewater's Best Chance at Success at the Next Level

First, let me start off saying the obvious; Teddy Bridgewater WILL BE a top-five pick in the upcoming draft. Stop with all of the Boyd and Mariota talk. Bridgewater is on another level and has been for two years now. Bridgewater is not the most amazing athlete, he is not a track star, he does not have the strongest arm in football, but one thing he has over everyone is balance. Bridgewater has the perfect combination of speed, arm strength, accuracy, decision making, and size to be great at the next level.

The big question is, where will Teddy go? Where should Teddy want to go? And where should Teddy pray he does not end up? Let’s answer all three of these questions.

Where should Bridgewater pull an Eli Manning on draft day and refuse to play? Well that would be with the Pittsburgh Steelers. I know, I know, they have the two-time world champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Yeah, good point. I mean it’s not like you just let a guy like Brett Favre or Peyton Manning go right? Oh…. Wait…. Right.

So let’s say the Steelers pull a Colts and think of their future because their present does not look very bright. They draft Bridgewater. I can tell you one thing, Teddy will not like the NFL for very long. He is a mobile smart quarterback, but with the offensive line that the Pittsburgh Steelers have, there is no happy days coming. Big Ben has been sacked 26 times this season and that number is not slowing down. Hopefully the Steelers can pick up a few more wins and get themselves out of Bridgewater contention.

Next up, let’s look into where Teddy Bridgewater should want to go. I think that it is a long shot, but with only two wins on the year, the Houston Texans still have a fairly decent shot at a top five pick. We all have watched the Houston Texan quarterbacks disappoint all season and Houston has quickly become known as pick-six city.

If Teddy Bridgewater gets to come into a team like Houston it would be tremendous for him. He will of course have expectations but with names such as Andre Johnson, Arian Foster, JJ Watt, and Brian Cushing, there is no way that all of the pressure to succeed will fall onto Bridgewater’s shoulders.

Another great part of coming onto this team is your receivers will be the All-Pro veteran Andre Johnson and this year’s standout rookie in DeAndre Hopkins. He will be able to feed the ball to Foster often as well which will allow him to take breaks and settle into the NFL. The best part about this would be that the Houston Texans are a great quarterback away from being a Super Bowl contender, and Teddy Bridgewater can become that guy.

But alas, we must bring ourselves back down to reality. The Steelers and Texans will likely pick up a few more wins and the teams who look like they are the worst teams, will be the worst teams. As far as where he will go, I don’t think we can look any further than the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This team is last in the league in both yards gained and points scored. The Jaguars have undoubtedly been the worst team in professional football and to top it off, they just got worse. Their best receiver Justin Blackmon is now suspended for the year for substance abuse. The Jaguars may easily lose 16 games this year and get the first overall pick.

Now if they have the first pick, many people think they should take the best player in college football, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. I do not disagree that he is a safer pick, but let me ask you this, if I tell you can have JJ Watt, right now, guaranteed or a CHANCE at an Aaron Rodgers, who do you take? I do not think there is a GM in football who would pass on that opportunity for Rodgers.

So now Teddy Bridgewater is a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. There are benefits to this however. If Teddy is on the worst team in football, expectations won’t be any higher than six wins, tops. Also with Blackmon back and hopefully a completely healthy Maurice Jones-Drew, Bridgewater could exceed expectations and build chemistry with a team that has a new look, now they just need a face of the franchise who is not their owner. Teddy Bridgewater can be that guy.

No matter who ends up with Bridgewater, there are not many situations where I see Teddy becoming a complete bust. Unless he goes to a team that can’t protect him, he will be a star at the next level for one lucky program.
