Every team needs good play from its tackles. Without a good set of tackles, even great quarterbacks are reduced to mediocrity. In the coming 2014 NFL Draft, there figures to be several teams that address their tackle situation early in an effort to keep their franchise leader upright and able to stand in the pocket. Here’s a look at a possible way things could fall, with emphasis on the tackle position.
1. Houston Texans: Teddy Bridgewater, Quarterback, Louisville
2. St Louis Rams: Jake Matthews, Offensive Tackle, Texas A&M – The Rams added Jake Long in the offseason, but he is getting older, while Roger Saffold, the other tackle, may be better suited to play inside. Matthews is the best tackle prospect in the draft, and can fit any scheme.
3. Oakland Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney, Defensive End, South Carolina
4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Derek Carr, Quarterback, Fresno State
5. Atlanta Falcons: Anthony Barr, Defensive End, UCLA
6. Cleveland Browns: Blake Bortles, Quarterback, Central Florida
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Taylor Lewan, Offensive Tackle, Michigan – Lewan is a nasty blocker who can dominate in the run game. The Bucs want to get Doug Martin going again next year and adding Lewan will help them achieve that.
8. Minnesota Vikings: Johnny Manziel, Quarterback, Texas A&M
9. Buffalo Bills: CJ Mosley, Linebacker, Alabama
10. Tennessee Titans: Khalil Mack, Linebacker, Buffalo
11. New York Giants: Greg Robinson, Offensive Tackle, Auburn – Robinson put on a show in Auburn’s biggest game. His long arms and raw power make him an immovable object on the line. He’s got a mean streak and it shows, especially in the run game.
12. Pittsburgh Steelers: Louis Nix, Defensive Tackle, Notre Dame
13. New York Jets: Sammy Watkins, Wide Receiver, Clemson
14. St Louis Rams: Eric Ebron, Tight End, North Carolina
15. Detroit Lions: Jason Verrett, Cornerback, Texas Christian
16. San Diego Chargers: Darqueze Dennard, Cornerback, Michigan State
17. Dallas Cowboys: HaHa Clinton-Dix, Safety, Alabama
18. Green Bay Packers: Jace Amaro, Tight End, Texas Tech
19. Baltimore Ravens: Mike Evans, Wide Receiver, Texas A&M
20. Philadelphia Eagles: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Cornerback, Oregon
21. Chicago Bears: Will Sutton, Defensive Tackle, Arizona State
22. Miami Dolphins: Antonio Richardson, Offensive Tackle, Tennessee – Richardson is a massive tackle, with long arms, who hasn’t reached his full potential yet. He’s athletic, and with a bit of coaching, could excel at the NFL level.
23. Cleveland Browns: Marqise Lee, Wide Receiver, USC
24. Cincinnati Bengals: Kyle Fuller, Cornerback, Virginia Tech
25. Arizona Cardinals: Cyrus Kouandjio, Offensive Tackle, Alabama – The Alabama tackle is another huge yet athletic offensive line prospect. He’s better at run blocking right now, but he has the physical gifts to succeed if he wants to.
26. New England Patriots: RaShede Hageman, Defensive Tackle, Minnesota
27. Carolina Panthers: Davante Adams, Wide Receiver, Fresno State
28. San Francisco 49ers: Jordan Matthews, Wide Receiver, Vanderbilt
29. New Orleans Saints: Vic Beasley, Linebacker, Clemson
30. Kansas City Chiefs: Allen Robinson, Wide Receiver, Penn State
31. Denver Broncos: Kon Ealy, Defensive End, Missouri
32. Seattle Seahawks: David Yankey, Offensive Guard, Stanford
