2014 NFL Scouting Combine: Sizing up the Outside Linebackers

With the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine’s arrival, it’s time to take a look at one of the more competitive positions in the draft, outside linebacker. With a mix of athletic pass rushers, stout run stuffers, and rangy coverage backers, this year’s class is diverse and talented. The Combine will feature 21 of the outside linebackers in the NFL Draft this year. The following are the top twelve:

  1.  Khalil Mack, Buffalo

  2.  Anthony Barr, UCLA

  3. Jeremiah Attaochu, Georgia Tech

  4. Kyle Van Noy, BYU

  5. Ryan Shazier, Ohio State

  6. Telvin Smith, Florida State

  7. Carl Bradford, Arizona State

  8. Adrian Hubbard, Alabama

  9. Trevor Reilly, Utah

10. Prince Shembo, Notre Dame

11. Jordan Tripp, Montana

12. Jordan Zumwalt, UCLA

Drills to Watch

The linebackers will be put through a host of drills, and some are more important than others. One of the more overlooked ones is the three-cone drill. The pass rushers are especially impacted by this test of quickness and body control. A good time here shows a player that can change direction quickly, and generate speed in a small area.

The 40-yard dash is always closely watched, by scouts as well as fans. The linebackers won’t put up the fastest times, but they can put up some eye-popping times. Having a blazing 40-time isn’t always an indicator of greatness, but it certainly has the ability to make a prospect stand out to teams.

The jump drills, both vertical and broad, are good indicators of the lower-body explosiveness the players have. The guys that put up top jump measurements indicate an ability to burst out of their stances and get to the place they need to be.

Players to Watch

Telvin Smith could put up some impressive numbers with his tremendous athleticism. His 40-time and agility drills could wow scouts all day. There are some questions about his size, so a nice showing in Indianapolis could help scouts ignore any of those issues. He’s a likely mid-second round pick, but could work his way up.

Another ultra-athletic outside linebacker who could shine in Indianapolis is Attaochu. He’s got the natural speed and agility to find his way into most plays. At the Combine, he can expect to do well in the agility drills such as the three-cone. He could impress at the jumps as well. He could wind up in the conversation for a top 20 selection.

The linebackers are always fun to watch at the Combine. They put on an impressive array of various skills, as they excel in many different areas. It’s a talented group at outside linebacker, and scouts will be watching closely. They all have the ability to help themselves in Indianapolis.
