The preseason starts for the NFL this week and training camps have already been underway for about one or two weeks. That is plenty of time for players’ stock to be either going up or going down, especially quarterbacks. Here are some quarterbacks whose stock is on the move heading into the preseason:
Brian Hoyer, Cleveland Browns, Stock Up
While the Browns’ offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, has said that the quarterback race between rookie Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer is a dead heat, most observers have said it’s Hoyer out in front. Not only that, but Hoyer has been taking all of the first team snaps while Manziel has been exclusively with the second team. What Hoyer offers the Browns is the ability to run the entire playbook and someone who is more capable at this point to make reads on the fly. Head coach Mike Pettine has said that the starting offensive line might play more during the preseason so both quarterbacks can get a fair shot, so this competition has a lot more ahead. But as of right now, it’s Hoyer’s job to lose.
Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings, Stock Down
Teddy Bridgewater is in the midst of an open quarterback competition in Minnesota with veteran Matt Cassel. As of right now, Bridgewater has looked skittish at times and hasn’t been getting his reads down. There have been times during this training camp that offensive coordinator Norv Turner has had to blow the play dead in the middle of the play to make sure that Bridgewater was making the correct reads. Once he gets to the preseason, things will be moving much faster than they are in training camp and, needless to say, faster yet when he gets to the regular season and teams aren’t playing in their preseason manila defenses.
Geno Smith, New York Jets, Stock Up
In New York this is Smith’s job to lose without a doubt. The Jets, however, got an insurance policy during the offseason by signing Michael Vick. He’s done well at training camp thus far and has new weapons in wide receiver Eric Decker and running back Chris Johnson. Something else he has going for him is that their current General Manager, Jon Idzik, was the one responsible for drafting Smith so it would take an awful lot for him to bench his own guy and basically give up on him so soon.
E.J. Manuel, Buffalo Bills, Stock Down
So far in training camp Manuel and new weapon Sammy Watkins haven’t been clicking as quickly as people might have hoped. What hasn’t helped Manuel is that his offensive line hasn’t looked too good so the defense has been getting pressure on him consistently. But even when Manuel has had time he hasn’t been very accurate. This is just training camp and I certainly expect him to improve, especially as he gets more experience and chemistry with Watkins. But going into the preseason, his stock is on its way down. Manuel was just 2-of-7 passing in the Bills preseason opener Sunday night.
Josh McCown, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Stock Up
Josh McCown has walked into a perfect situation in Tampa Bay. McCown is coming from the Chicago Bears, where current Tampa Bay head coach Lovie Smith had coached two seasons ago. So Smith is familiar with McCown and McCown is familiar with Smith. McCown is also familiar with the offense Smith wants to run.
Throughout this training camp McCown has also not wasted any time developing very good chemistry with number one wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Jackson is an amazing playmaker and developing chemistry with him could make quite a difference for McCown. Going into the preseason expectations are extremely high for McCown and I expect them to get even higher once he has a very solid preseason.
