2014 Senior Bowl: Ranking the Wide Receivers

Time to look at the wide receivers in Mobile, Alabama for the senior bowl this week. Not all of the receivers are lucky enough to be on the South team with Derek Carr but we can’t all be so lucky. This week is a big week for all attending players, and not all of them will be drafted, but this is a stepping stone on their way to the NFL.

14. Kain Colter, Northeastern

Former quarterback is playing wide receiver at the senior bowl this week, Colter will need to impress. Colter has impressive numbers when he does have the ball in his hands and had 43 catches his sophomore year at Northeastern.

13. Jeff Janis, Saginaw Valley State

Janis is a lesser known wide receiver because he went to a division II school. He’ll need to show that he can compete with more skilled players to get strong draft consideration. He racked up the yardage last year while averaging 18.9 yards per catch.

12. Shaq Evans, UCLA

Evans doesn’t have the best hands in the world, and runs some lazy routes so showing some good work ethic could be a big deal for him this week.

11. Kevin Norwood, Alabama

Norwood didn’t have impressive numbers while at Alabama, and being the second passing option in a run first offense will do that. Norwood has decent size but lacks impressive speed.

10. Robert Herron, Wyoming

Herron is a bit of speedster, who does a good job catching the ball downfield. Not a very big wide receiver, listed at 5’9 and 190 pounds, he’s still a pretty tough guy with the ball in his hands.

9. Michael Campanaro, Wake Forest

Campanaro is a quicker than fast type wide receiver who runs routes well. He does a great job plucking the ball out of the air. He’s been held back a bit by bad quarterback play, but that’s not much of an excuse anymore.

8. Solomon Patton, Florida

Patton is a smaller receiver, 5’8" and 180 pounds, but he’s exciting to watch with the ball in his hands. Player that comes to mind most when watching him is Julian Edelman.

7. Cody Hoffman, BYU

Hoffman is the biggest receiver at the senior bowl, just under 6’4 and 220 pounds. Hoffman missed a few games in his senior season, some to injury and some to discipline. Hoffman needs to show scouts he has what it takes this week.

6. Jalen Saunders, Oklahoma

Very small wide receiver, 5’8" and 164 pounds, he’ll spend his time in the slot at the next level. He needs to show scouts he belongs at the next level though, as a large portion of scouting has come down to measurements and he simply doesn’t measure up. Exciting player in college, time will tell how it translates though.

5. Ryan Grant, Tulane

Grant measured in well at the senior bowl, and should impress. Grant doesn’t get much hype because he played at Tulane, but he’s shown he can catch the ball away from his body well and coming off back to back 1,000 yard seasons is impressive in its own right.

4. Mike Davis, Texas

Davis is yet another player who was held back by their quarterbacks in college. Davis has ideal size and speed for the next level and has apparently been impressing down in Mobile this week.

3. Josh Huff, Oregon

Huff just posted his first 1,000-yard season at Oregon this year but it was also his first completely healthy year. Huff has reportedly practiced well this week and that was to be expected.

2. Jared Abbrederis, Wisconsin

Abbrederis has been impressing in Mobile this week, running routes well and catching everything. Abbrederis brings an added element though as a returner which he used to do a lot more while at Wisconsin.

1. Jordan Mathews, Vanderbilt

Mathews has impressed plenty of people this week with his weigh in and his work ethic. Mathews has the biggest hands and wingspan of all the wide receivers and requested game film of the wide receivers he’d be facing at the senior bowl so he could study them. Mathews has even been staying late after practices to work with Derek Carr to get their timing better for the week. Mathews has been winning the week and with that work ethic it’s easy to see why.
