2015 Fantasy Football Preview: Arizona Cardinals

2014 Review

There really wasn't a whole lot to write home about here. Carson Palmer, who was a borderline QB1 option before going down with a torn ACL during the team's sixth game, gave way to a combination of irrelevant fantasy options, including Ryan Lindley and Drew Stanton. Overall, Arizona's quarterbacks combined for less than 4,000 passing yards with 21 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions.

Running backs didn't fair much better either. Andre Ellington, who put up over 1,000 total yards and five scores on the season, missed the final four games with injury. As was the case at quarterback, Cardinals' backups didn't do much here from a fantasy standpoint. Stepfan Taylor and Kerwynn Williams combined for just 454 rushing yards on 116 attempts.

The one position here that did live up to expectations was wide receiver. Michael Floyd (47 receptions, 841 yards and six touchdowns) finished as a mid-tier FLEX option. Meanwhile, rookie John Brown added 696 yards on 48 receptions.

NFL Draft

David Johnson, who the Cardinals stole in the third round of the draft, is going to be a breakout star as a rookie. Based on pure talent, he should earn the starting job in camp, acting as the lightning to Andre Ellington's thunder. The 6-foot-1, 224-pound running back from Northern Iowa put up put up over 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. He's a solid mid-round add, which could turn into a top-tier RB2 option depending on how the Cardinals running back situation plays out during training camp.

J.J. Nelson is someone to keep an eye on in deeper dynasty leagues. He's unlikely to make an impact as a rookie, but the 5-foot-10 wide receiver from Kansas State could act the part of a slot option moving forward.

Potential Breakout Star

John Brown had an exceptional rookie season. As we mentioned above, he went for nearly 700 yards and five scores. While Brown did catch less than 50 percent of his passes, a lot of that had to do with Arizona's lackluster quarterback play when Palmer went down. Now primed to take more reps from Larry Fitzgerald, potentially even playing a bit on the outside, Brown should have a great sophomore campaign. There's no reason to believe he won't be able to put up 60-plus receptions for 900-plus yards and near double-digit scores.

Potential Disappointment

Fitzgerald is likely going to be phased out as a primary target for Palmer this year. Even as Arizona's most-targeted receiver last year, the future Hall of Famer put up less than 800 yards and two scores. It wouldn't be too surprising to see his reception and yards numbers dip considerably in 2015.
