2014 Review
If you asked the big networks, the Cleveland Browns offense was set to explode last season with the help of Josh Gordon and Johnny Manziel. Needless to say, expectations were never remotely close to being met. Gordon played in just five games, Manziel played one full game and the offense was left to Brian Hoyer and the running backs.
Fortunately, the rookie running back duo of Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West shined when called. The pair combined for 1,280 yards on 319 carries. Considering they were facing stacked boxes with defenses showing little respect for the quarterback, it was impressive. Crowell flashed more talent, making fans think back to the young, star running back of the Georgia Bulldogs.
As for wide receiver, well the team was led by Miles Austin, Taylor Gabriel and Andrew Hawkins. While Hawkins is a solid slot receiver and Gabriel has flashed, the quarterback situation always kept them from being reliable, productive weapons. Even with the new quarterback, Josh McCown, it will remain a problem in 2015.
NFL Draft
Duke Johnson, Running Back
With all the questions at receiver, the Browns went in a different direction to improve their offense. While Johnson is a running back, his best works comes when he slips out of the backfield and works as a receiver. He's an electrifying player with very good hands and a great sense of how to use movement in the open field.
Cleveland is already making plans to work him into the offense, including moving him out wide. Crowell is taking over the reps on first and second down, but Johnson will be the guy in passing situations. The Browns believe Johnson can be their Giovani Bernard and as fantasy owners know, that could be a nice weapon to have. Be sure to track how Johnson does during training camp and keep him on your fantasy radar in standard leagues, but he's a must have in dynasty.
Vince Mayle, Wide Receiver
As Luke Inman mentioned in the video above, Cleveland had 19 picks in the first three rounds since 2013 and haven't drafted a single wide receiver with those 19 selections. Instead, they thought Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline, two receivers who combined for just 1,228 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Yet even with the massive questions at wide receiver, Mayle is not a worthwhile fantasy option. Cleveland's fourthr-ound pick had questions about his hands after drop issues at Washington State. Pair that with thumb surgery in May which kept him out of OTA's and you have a drop-prone rookie behind the playbook with less than ideal athletic traits.
Potential Breakout Star
NONE
With Johnson already highlighted as a rookie to watch out for in PPR leagues, there is no other sleeper or breakout star on this offense. Cleveland's passing attack will be nauseating this season. While it starts with Josh McCown at quarterback, easily one of the top-three worst projected starters this season, Cleveland adds on to it with its dreadful receiving core. Everyone is aware of Crowell and West so that takes running backs out of the picture and there is just no way I'm drafting a Browns quarterback, wide receiver or tight end.
Potential Disappointment
Terrance West, Running Back
Picking a player from this offense to disappoint is a decisoon between two players, West or Crowell. Coming off a rookie season where he finished with nearly 700 yards on 171 carries, you could see a drop in production from the second-year back. ESPN's Tony Grossi wrote some bad news for anyone that had high hopes for West this season. Crowell was the clear leader in reps at OTA's and when he was given rest, Johnson and Shaun Draughn stole reps away from West. When someone like Draughn is taking reps from West, that serves as a red flag for fantasy owners. If you are going to draft a Cleveland Brown to your fantasy team, only make it Crowell.
