2015 Fantasy Football Preview: Tennessee Titans

2014 Review

In their first year under coach Ken Whisenhunt, things did not go well for the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee was 22nd in passing yards per game (213), passing touchdowns (20), 27th in completion percentage (58.3) and 26th in rushing yards per game (90.4).

Zach Mettenberger and Charlie Whitehurst combined to complete 58.2 percent of their pass attempts, with 2,738 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 364 attempts. When either quarterback was starting, they were both under pressure often.

Rookie Bishop Sankey had minimal support from the quarterbacks to get the defense to ease off the run, which played a partial role in the rookie's disappointing season. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry, with 569 yards and two rushing touchdowns and simply couldn't be used near the goal line.

Overall, this offense just didn't offer any real substantial fantasy player who people could put into their lineups with any confidence. It's why they picked second overall and used most of their picks on the offensive side of the ball.

Veteran Additions

Harry Douglas, Wide Receiver:

Tennessee made upgrading its wide receiving corps a priority this offseason. Douglas was expected to see the field in three-receiver sets this season but Justin Hunter's legal trouble has opened the door for the 30-year-old to start in two-receiver sets. While a few will see Douglas' 2013 season when he had 85 receptions for 1,067 yards, that is the outlier over his career numbers. But he is in a situation where he will see targets and contribute early, he just doesn't have the ability to be fantasy relevant.

Hakeem Nicks, Wide Receiver

We all remember Nicks' days as a fantasy study, back in 2010 and '11 when he combined for 2,244 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. Nicks would never surpass 692 yards or four touchdowns again over the last three seasons. Injuries have sapped what Nicks once was, while we keep hearing how healthy he is this year and how a new system will help him, but it's the same excuses. Nicks is not on any fantasy radar this season.

NFL Draft

Marcus Mariota, Quarterback:

Tennessee made it a priority to upgrade at quarterback; the biggest step in helping its offense take a major step forward. The Titans have invested in their offensive line in previous drafts with Taylor Lewan, Chance Warmack and Brian Schwenke. There is also talent in place at wide receiver and tight end, making it an ideal spot for a young quarterback.

Mariota has been handed the keys to the starting job since he walked on to the team's facilities. The reports out of camp have been very positive, which is nice to see considering the typical "concerns" some have one a college spread quarterback transitions to the NFL. But it's also important to recognize with that concern, that it's the job of the offensive coordinator to help scheme the offense to help the quarterback who was drafted to be their franchise star. This offense will be tailored to help Mariota and there are nice weapons in place to help him have a solid season, especially for a rookie.

Dorial Green-Beckham, Wide Receiver:

With its quarterback in place, Tennessee sought out to add a physical specimen who could become Mariota's go-to target for years to come. Green-Beckham has prototypical size at 6'5" and 245 lbs.f, paired with long arms and exemplary speed for his size. He has sure hands and has shown both the strength, leaping ability and size to catch jump balls and take the ball in contested situations.

All of that makes Green-Beckham a tantalizing fantasy and real-life prospect, but he has played just 25 games since high school and hasn't played in a game since the 2013 season. The limited snaps mean limited time to develop as a route runner and his 2013 season showed he could run the only basic routes. It's going to take time for him to get back in the flow of things. Titans' reporter Paul Kuharsky shared his expectations early in camp for Kendall Wright and Douglas to open the season as starters. He could become a fantasy factor alter in the season, he certainly is a dynasty target, but expectations in year one should be low.

David Cobb, Running Back:

A year after drafting Bishop Sankey in the second round, the Titans added Cobb to the backfield this offseason. While Cobb was a fifth-round pick, he slid in part because the running back class was deeper in 2015 tha the 2014 draft class. He isn't a home-run hitter by any means, but he has good feet and vision, knowing how to read his blocks and react quickly to find the right hole. His purpose is as a thumper, lowering his pads and driving through tacklers.

Early in training camp, Cobb hasn't seen many reps, which became even more of a problem after he broke his finger. It's going to take time for the rookie to climb the depth chart, slowly earning each rep. But he should emerge as a short-yardage back and work heavily near the goal line this season. It doesn't make him a key fantasy player, but worth monitoring during some weeks.
