Name: Brett Hundley
College: UCLA
Class: Junior
Position: QB
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 227
Background/Character | Leadership: 9 | Experience: 8 | Off-the-Field: 10 |
| Mental Capacity: 8 | Mental Toughness: 7 | Durability: 7 |
There are absolutely no character concerns here. Hundey's injury history includes a recent thumb issue that forced him from the Stanford game to end the regular season. Outside of that, it is really a clean slate for Hundley heading into postseason events and UCLA's bowl game. In terms of experience, Hundley will finish his college career with 40 starts. Along with Mariota, Hundley is the most athletic top pro prospect heading into the 2015 NFL draft. He does a tremendous job finding lanes to run through on called run plays, and is solid when it comes to following his blockers. Hundley's frame, unlike someone like Robert Griffin III, should also hold up. He does, however, need to understand when to slide or run out of bounds. No real reason to take extra hits for a yard or two. He will be a duel-threat quarterback at the next level. (Final Grade: 7.17)
Arm Talent | Arm Strength: 9 | Velocity Control: 6 | Touch: 6 |
| Arm Adjustment: 5 | Release Quicks: 3 | On The Move: 8 |

In terms of pure arm strength, there is no other quarterback in the 2015 draft class that compares to Hundley. But if that was the end all be all, the likes of Jeff George and JaMarcus Russell would have been successful in the NFL. Hundley needs to do a better job understanding where the throw is going and putting the necessary touch on it in order to make it an easier catch for the receiver. He'll throw a frozen rope on a six-yard slant, which makes it incredibly difficult on the pass catcher.
Hundley also struggles adjusting his throwing motion to make up for oncoming pressure, which will lead to a lot of batted balls and potential turnovers at the NFL level. He also has an extended throwing motion, which makes it nearly impossible for a quick release. Outside of any other quarterback in this class other than Marcus Mariota, Hundley is the most electric when throwing on the run. Interestingly enough, he's almost more accurate rolling out than when in the pocket. (Final Grade: 6.17)
Passing Technique | Mechanics: 5 | Release: 4 | Under Pressure: 4 |
| Drops: 6 | Movement: 7 | Throwing Base: 5 |
Hundley's biggest issue heading into draft season are his mechanics. He does a horrible job resetting after being faced with initial pressure, he struggles stepping into passes, has a longated throwing motion, drops his shoulder at himes, and doesn't possess a consistent throwing motion. And while Hundley does show solid movement, his pocket awareness leaves a whole lot to be desired.
On tape, Hundley tends to drop his shoulder and doesn't step into his pass when throwing down field. His strong arm may be able to mask this at a college level, but it will lead to accuracy issues against better defenders at the NFL level. One of my biggest concerns with the UCLA product is that he gets rattled pretty easily by pressure, which leads to a breakdown in his mechanics. (Final Grade: 5.17)
Passing Instincts | Football I.Q: 7 | Pre-Snap Reads: 5 | Field Vision: 6 |
| Decision Making: 6 | Pocket Awareness: 4 | Poise: 5 |
It may sound like I am extremey love on Hundey, but that's only because expectations were much higher for him following a great 2012 campaign. Since then, it seems that he has not progressed in certain aspects of the game that he struggled with earlier in his career. One of the biggest issues is field vision. Hundey is pretty much a one-read quarterback right now. And that's a rather disturbing trend considering that he playe in somewhat of a pro-style offense under Jim Mora Jr. with the Bruins. Too often, Hundley will lock into the primary target. And if that target is not open, he will make the decision to run instead of keeping his head up down the field. Again, that's not going to work at the NFL level.
Decision making is also an issue, but that has to do more with Hundley's inability to progress through his first read. He will throw through tight windowns, which again will not be afforded to him at the next level. (Final Grade: 5.50)
