2015 Senior Bowl Notebook: Carl Davis Interview

Iowa defensive tackle Carl Davis doesn’t know what he’s going to buy when he gets cut his first NFL paycheck, but he does know he won’t end up on ESPN 30 for 30s “Broke."  The monster man in the middle said the documentary made a lasting impression on him and has learned from the athletes before him mistakes.

On the field, however, Davis has enjoyed the overall Senior Bowl experience and said while the practice time shared with teammates and coaches was specifically his favorite part of the week. He noted that the practice periods themselves were also the hardest part of the week, specifcially the fierce competition the talented rosters bring to the table.

When I had him take a step back from Mobile, Alabama and reflect on his college days, Davis pointed out his Hawkeyes defense ran a 4-3 under base, which called for him to chew up as many blockers willing to free up his linebackers to make plays.  It’s that unselfish attitude and Davis’ ability to line up and be effective at multiple positions that have opened eyes of NFL scouts.

Another lasting impression, Davis pointed out from his Iowa days was the talent at running back in the Big Ten conference, something he was all to familiar with playing some of the nation's top running backs week in and week out.  When forced to pick the toughest running back to defend of the bunch Davis sprung the popular choice from Wisconsin in Melvin Gordon.

You can check out all this and plenty more in my up close interview with the big man himself, including who the 6’4” 317 pound interior defensive lineman molds his game after and what his main focus was heading into the week long event.
