A new season, the same exact story. A team that's been among the worst in recent NFL history, the Cleveland Browns finished the 2015 campaign with a 3-13 record.
It represented the team's seventh season with five-plus losses in eight years. It also led to a complete turnover within the team's front office and coaching staff. Gone is head coach Mike Pettine. Gone is general manager Ray Farmer.
Also likely gone is the troubled Johnny Manziel at quarterback — something that will likely lead to Cleveland having to go quarterback early in the 2016 NFL draft.
In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the Cleveland Browns as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for Cleveland while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.
Team Needs
1. Quarterback
Unless the Browns are content with Josh McCown at quarterback or plan on addressing the need via free agency or a trade, they are most definitely going to use that No. 2 overall pick on this position. The question now becomes who they will pick.
A lot has been made about the size of Jared Goff's hands (yes, that's a real thing). With nine-inch hands, this is one area that Goff might match up to other quarterback prospects. Outside of that, he should be the top quarterback off the board (and it's not that close). Short of Cleveland taking hand size into account, Goff should be its pick at two. If not, it will either be Carson Wentz or Paxton Lynch.
2. Wide Receiver
Cleveland may be willing to let Josh Gordon back into the mix after a year-plus suspension. Though, we have absolutely no idea when Gordon will be reinstated by the NFL. We also don't know if Gordon will remain clean once he returns from the suspension.
The top receiver from this past season, Travis Benjamin (68 receptions, 966 yards) is set to become a free agent. Add in the fact that talks have broken down between Benjamin and the Browns, and things aren't looking promising there.
3. Safety
Much like Benjamin, we have no idea whether Tashaun Gipson will be returning to the Browns. The former Pro Bowler is set to become a free agent, and there's no telling he will be back. In addition to this, it's likely the Browns will release veteran strong safety Donte Whitner. Needless to say, there's going to be a need here, potentially at both free and strong safety.
4. Offensive Tackle
Mitchell Schwartz is set to becomeme a free agent. And while the Browns would like to retain him, he struggled a great deal last season in comparison to previous years. This means that Cleveland will potentially need to find a replacement at right tackle. The good news here is that Joe Thomas is firmly implanted in as the starting left tackle, meaning Cleveland can look solely at right tackle later in the draft.
5. Defensive End
This is primarily going to be from a pass-rushing standpoint. Cleveland will continue to run a 3-4 with Ray Horton as the team's new defensive coordinator. However, the team simply needs to find an upgrade over Joe Hughes. The idea will be to give the team someone that can both stop the run and rush the passer. It's a hard get in the draft, bbut something this new front office will have to do at some point during the offseason.
